Pad above gas tank?

I changed out my fuel sending unit a bit ago (actually a couple times til I got one to work, but that's another story). Well during the course of all this I noticed there was some "cardboard type" sheet of material above the gas tank, that fit between the gas tank and the body. I ended up tossing it, because it was pretty well thrashed. Now I have painted everything back there so my question is this..

Do I need that sheet? What is the purpose (I assume to stop corrosion) of it? Will it be ok without it as I have painted everything around it? Does anyone make repops?

I have heard a little bit of bumping noise back there lately, but I assumed it's the exhaust (dual exhaust now, and 1 side isn't hung quite as well as the original) so I was going to fix that. It just now occurred to me that it could be because of lack of padding between the gas tank and the body, although the gas tank is strapped in tight and has no real range of movement...

yes you need the pad to stop steel on steel rubbing / noise
I used closed cell foam packing material but this may not be the best idea

And yes, repops are out there. I would go with the foam.

Like you, I have used other things. I've used roofing felt since I usually have some hanging around. I hate buying a restoration piece for something of this nature

Repops are available but I think they are kind of expensive for what they are.  I just glued two pieces of roofing felt together and applied it to the tank.  The original pad was a thicker foam type stuff.

Cell foam packing material, I think thats Neoprene, or similar, should be a good choise, Neoprene is resistant to oil, heat etc. (made by DuPont I believe). I used it under floors for sound deadening purpose in studios.
