exhaust coating options
« on: March 06, 2015 - 05:07:00 PM »

what and where are a guys options on coating a set of headers. These are raw, never been painter or even ran. Besides chroming (I'm checking into cost on that), what else can be done? I know from the header manufacturers you can get ceramic coatings but who does that ? Also will powder coating last ? what else is there and who does it?
thanks   :walkaway:

Ceramic coating, only way to go.  :2cents:  Powder coating won't last, chrome will be spensive.

X2 for ceramic coating.  I had a cheap set of headers stripped and ceramic coated in a project years ago and they looked good and held up good too.  They did stain abit when oil went on them but I think there was a way of cleaning/ buffing that out.  I used a local guy so I can't recommend anyone.

x2 for Jet Hot. For the rest of the exhaust (headers back) I painted the pipes with high heat engine paint. Pipes don't get hot enough for paint to burn off, and they don't rust on the outside.  Still looked good after 2 years.

Seems like theres alot of companies besides Jet Hot Coatings doing this.
Some are closer to where I live.

I would like to get manifolds done.

Is their product expertise any better than any of their competitors?

Not necessarily. Jet Hot was one of the first in the business, Now there are companies all over the country doing it. Check out your more local vendors. Look at their work, ask for references, guarantees etc. Quality of the actual product should be similar. What you need to make sure of is the quality of prep/application.  :2cents:

Agree, the prep especially. And make sure your coater bakes them. Had a little incedent here with a local guy, paid for manifolds to be ceramic coated, when I asked how long he baked them he said he didn't, that once on the car the heat of the exhaust would bake them.  :stomp:  Needless to say I don't use him anymore.

Had Jet Hot do the headers for my race cars over the years, but my last pair for the street 'Cuda I had some issues.

Next set I do will probably be Nitro-Plate... http://nitroplate.com/

Sounds like the self application stuff  you can buy out of Eastwood.

I have used their black exhaust thermal coating on a set of headers before. Had them sand blasted, cleaned with acetone, then spray it using a detail gun. Per their instructions, it cures using exhaust heat. They looked good for about 5-6 years, but after that they slowly reverted back to being ugly over the next 4-5 years.  Lasted a heck of a lot longer than regular paint, but not nearly as long as a good application from the pros. I've often wondered if baking before install would have helped at all.

Google thermal exhaust coatings to see all the providers out there. There are a few different options.

Another vote for ceramic coating. Durable and will look good.
