489 carrier are the preferred!!

Any bigger gear will help you... 3.55's - 3.73's - 3.91's... that will WAKE your car up!! :grinyes:

I have the same question.  I have a 741 rear with 3.91's.  I want to swap to 3.55 sure grip with the big u-joints for my future big block but unsure which carrier to use.  The difference is that the 741 has the smallest diameter pinion shaft, 742 is larger diameter, and the 489 is a tapered pinion shaft.  Randy's ring and pinon sells the whole shebang for about $1000.  I know the 489 is the "correct" chunk for the E bodies, but other than that why is it "preferred" over the 742?  Randy's charges more for the 742 than the 489.

there is no significant difference between the 489 & 742 except that the 489 uses a crush sleeve which is the weaker design , the sleeve can be replaced with a Ratech spacer part#4103 & then use shims like the 742 carrier making them equal in my opinion

you can usea 741 but it seems a watse to spend $$ on gears for the weaker carrier

Chryco.  I will be running a340 4 gear.  You helped me alot in post under engines  i gave you all the #,s for block , heads , intake etc . I replied in that post that i found letter 0 on heads. You said that it is a very good comb.  letter 0 , still as good a j heads.???. Please advise on 741 now that you know engine size etc. If you think 742 is the way to go i will look for one. Thanks Terry,,, new to mopar.

gear set are extremely limited for the 471 carrier where the 472 and 489 have a much larger selection available and altho the 471 is defineatly the weakest carrier it isnt a total wimp. I have one setup that I have used on occaison behing everything from a hemi to a hot 360

the 3.55 is a good all round gear
the  742 carrier wil l ive ok behind a small block [too many memebrs to remember everyones combo , not that good !!] you won`t break it unless you use slick at the track
The O heads are the same casting as the J heads

Got my attention, are you saying that a '742 cannot stand up to the use of drag slicks?    We plan to use slicks and are on the fence between using (we have both) a '742 or a '489

the 741 si ok behind most engines , as long as the tires spin it will live & anahilated a 742 with slick in my Cuda but it hooked hard , I also broke 3 742/489s behind my 440 duster with slicks
