Idle Stop Solenoid
« on: March 07, 2015 - 08:57:50 PM »
How can I determine if my car originally came with an idle stop solenoid?  It is a 1970 340 4 speed cuda.  The original carb was long gone when I bought the car, but I have since found a Carter 4933S that I intend to install when I complete the restoration.  The 4933S I found does not have the idle stop solenoid or a bracket for one.  I don't see any wiring in the engine bay for an idle stop solenoid, but it could have been removed.  I read somewhere that I should only have the stop solenoid if the car was set up for California Emmissions.  Having trouble finding good information.  Do any of you guys know? :1zhelp:

I found the solenoid article in my archived files.
It's a pdf. Send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll reply back with it.

A very good article with visual identifications.

Thanks Topcat.  PM Sent.  Look forward to seeing it.

Checked my service manual against the carbs you had listed for a 1970 340.  For 1970 with a 340 the AVS-4936S and AVS-4937S are both shown with a Fast Curb Idle Solenoid and are listed for ECS (Evaporation Control System).  The figure clearly shows a solenoid installed.

My car does not have any of the ECS items, so the AVS-4933S is listed as the correct carb for a 1970 Cuda with manual transmission.  The 4933S is listed as a CAS (Cleaner Air System) and when you go to the figure they reference, it does not show a fast curb idle solenoid installed.

I think my confusion came because I saw a number of restored AVS-4933S carbs for sale that had solenoids installed?  Looking at the carb I have, the threads at the mounting holes are shiny and not oxidized.  Makes me think one was installed and then removed.

DR1114429 reproduction solenoid is rapidly disappearing.
It doesn't appear they will be reproduced again either.

Dale's Cuda Shop no longer has them
Mega Parts no longer carries them.
many other vendors are out as well.

The only place I was able to get one was a place out of W. VA. called Little Detroit.
If this part is on your wish list, I would get it now while there are a few left.

All 1970 and 71 Hemi engines were equipped with a carb idle solenoid.  The solenoid is attached to a special bracket mounted between the front and rear carbs on the left side, figure 10.
The plunger (adjustable) should have a ROUND brass head.  The ID number DR1114429 (note: same as 70 440-6 and 340-6, see fig. 7) is stamped into the barrel facing the front (radiator) of the car.  The positive wire, medium blue in color, connects to the terminal at the bottom of the solenoid, figure 10A.  The wire is a part of the wiring harness.

The 1971 340-4bbl engines utilized a Thermo-quad carb and did not use the types of solenoids discussed here.

I'll be glad to send you the word document with pictures per your pm your e-mail.

Holy crap!

It sold for $501.00 dollars.

For that sale price I'll bet you will see a lot more of them listed on Ebay. That s one of the cleanest solenoids I ve seen.
