is this a 1970 trunk lid?
« on: March 11, 2015 - 12:22:06 PM »
Hi everyone, there seems to be some question as to whether or not this is a 1970 Challenger trunk lid. Can anyone confirm for me please?

Thanks

I just did a quick GooGle search.....Apparently very early 70 deck lids had no spoiler cut outs only luggage rack cut outs which that one appears to have. However the 73-74 ones are the same.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Since both the Trans Am and Go Wing spoilers were added mid year the early trunk lids did not have provisions to mount them. I know nothing about later year trunk lids, but I don't see any reason they would need to change them even if spoilers were not available anymore.

Wild guess it's an early 1970 lid from the Hamtramck plant as it looks like it had a painted striker as evidenced by no paint under it.

See this link.

That trunk does not have the luggage rack holes which would be found on the early 70 deck lids.
I would say that is a later version 73/74 deck lid.

I picked up at a swap meet a few years ago an original paint, early 70 deck lid with unpainted striker, early version trunk sticker, with luggage rack holes, but without T/A or go-wing notches. The trunk stickers are also a tell of the vintage as there were different variants of those too.

Let me know if you need a pic or two.

Stupid Question, if the car was not optioned to have a luggage rack would the trunk lid have holes for a rack anyways?

 :iagree:

Same as hoods having holes on the inner structure for hood pins. The provisions are there if the holes on the top side had to be punched / drilled out.
