Power Steering Pump Cap
« on: March 18, 2015 - 12:24:34 PM »
Long > short.  I notice small amounts of power steering fluid on the casing.  The cap leaks.  When you put it on and give it proper turn .. you can pull it right off with just little pressure.

From the look of it ... I am not even sure it is right cap (tabs are much smaller than slots in neck of pump) .... and after calling around to summit, yearone, and some others ... I know why they may not have the right one on it .... I can't seem to find anyone that sells cap.

I fabricated a rubber gasket (one on cap seems to thin or small) ... that seems to keep cap on with more vigor ... but ....

Anyone have any suggestions?  Or am I just looking in wrong places?

Thanks for the help!

What ps pump do you have? Federal or Saginaw?  They probably take a different cap.

I'm not sure.   :dunno:

Here's a quick pic I took.  Not sure if anyone can tell from this shot or angle.

But you may be right - it might have cap from other brand.

Thx!

That's a Saginaw pump and the cap looks correct.  It's just plastic and could be warped.  I just Googled "Saginaw ps cap" and came up with this.  It's probably available from many other sources. Try Dave at Roseville and see if he can get one.

drive down to your local auto parts store and look on their "Help" rack. Any good store will have several in stock.

:iagree: Pretty common part, I would try NAPA or something before going to a restoration shop. :2cents:

Since weather has been icky, I've had time to really go over the car ... the resto they did seems excellent .... just a few minor things here and there I've trying to get nailed down before we start running her ..  :burnout:

The Saginaw OEM caps had ears on them. The replacements are like the picture. My OEM developed a leak and a thin rubber gasket solved the problem.

My 73 has the style that's pictured.  They must have changed them at some point.
