Got my hood black-out decal put on last night. As mentioned, it was purchased from CI over a year ago and had been in the shipping tube since then. It had the same wrinkles or puckering as mar70challenger mentioned with his once it was laid flat. One thing I did was roll the decal back up and kept it in tube until the day I decided to apply it. This way the wrinkles were able to smooth back out once it was rolled up again.

Couldn't decide on which method to use:

1) Saw how dayley / challenger and others used the fold method by applying half of the decal at a time. This definitely works best to get it positioned and not have to worry about moving it once you start. The problem was the directions from the manufacturer of the decal said to NOT get the backing paper wet. I knew that would be unavoidable if I tried this method.

2) The method I chose was to completely take off the backing paper and wet the decal with a lot of soapy water (you also need to prep the hood by using alcohol or a wax and grease remover, tack any dust, and then spray and wipe the soapy water solution on the hood). The soapy water on both the decal and hood give you time to "float" the decal and move it around and measure your side-to-side and other measurements.

Thought I had it positioned just right -  but then noticed it had moved and even after starting to squeege water out was still able to lift decal and re-position until it was right. I would recommend using the vertical center mark that dayley / challenger shows in his post and maybe also doing one horizontally with points on the hood before your remove backing. This would take a lot of the guess work out of getting it centered.

First pic shows pre-mask still on decal.
Second pic taking off pre-mask next day.
Third pic - final result. Turned out almost perfect! Only a small bubble by hood lip.

Thanks Rick, especially for advice on "NOT getting backing paper wet".  I saw that in the directions ... and also found in another thread someone who did ... it will start to disintegrate the paper and make it tough to take off (start tearing into little pieces).

I am still waiting on CI ... spoke to them again Monday .. they said they were pulling some in inventory to compare ... should hear from them today .. but nice to see yours laid down.  My only worry now is the glue drying up - but maybe it doesn't work that way .... we'll find out ...  :grinyes:

Looks great and good job!!!!

That's what scares me about big companies like CI and stripes....How old is it ? How long has it been sitting "in inventory" ?

That's why I'll only order stripes from PERFORMANCE CAR GRAPHICS....David has nothing in stock...He takes your order, cuts your stripes fresh, dates them and sends them to you. :2thumbs:
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Quick question on removing from trim.

I took look today - it appears they used some black silly-like-putty around backside where nuts are ... I thought at first it was RTV or some kind of basic gasket sealant ... but its still pretty pliable and stick (like silly putty)

I am assuming its to seal and ensure water doesn't get it or sit there and rust the elements.

Anyone know what it is?  It will obviously come off when I take trim off ... what do you guys use?

Thanks!!!

I have applied decals on company trucks for almost 20 years.  Be sure to lay it out flat to "relax" and if you can safely lay it out in the sun to warm before you start.  A heat gun -only on LOW- may help.  The heat gun can ruin your decal in less than a second if you are not careful and use to using it.  PATIENCE is the key and lots of soapy water!  Keep everything wet and you can adjust as much as you need....

Son got it done today ....   :bananasmi:

Love the look ... if you read in another thread ... idea really came about as suggestion from someone here after a crack in paint appeared ... you can actually still see crack faintly .. but nothing like before .... c'est la vie ... think it accents roof and stripes quite well

I'll get better pics soon .. thanks for all help
