Differential time
« on: March 23, 2015 - 07:00:24 PM »
Hi All,
my rear is very noisy with a howl. Sometimes a clunk when going into drive but not always also a it has a droning vibration at 60 MPH.  I have a bone yard piece in there from years back when I wanted 3:55 gears.  I have never had the pattern checked but I assume its well worn.  A couple of years back I had the Green Axel bearings pressed on hoping I could get rid of the vibration. Anyway, how much $$should I expect to pay for someone to go through the center section and replace whats worn etc? I'm also wondering if I look for a trans shop to do the work ??? Am I better off price wise to buy a piece already set up and ready to toss in say from Dr.Diff?

Thanks for any info.

Hi John,

If you have money to throw at it, you can have a differential shop get you the parts and then they will build it up and set it all with right pattern and back lash as well. If you like challenges and you are A fair machanic, you can do this job youself.

You have to ask youself a few guestion on what you would like in the build. Limited slip or open gears, what brand of gears? The overhaul bearing kit will run around $150 ish, limited slip unit $400 to $500, set of gears $350. Prices are very rough but you see the $ adding up and the if you have a shop do the parts and  labor, you can see where this is going,$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Do some homework of your own, get on YouTube,   Search  Google  this can help you  make a decision on the way you go.

I hope I've helped you on you way, this is just my two cents, good luck

Steve

I would seriously look at a Dana 60 you could do a Tru Trac with the gear ratio you want , narrowed with B body spec for more tire clearance , 35 spline axles , totally indestructable for under 2 k all new

great info.  this is what i needed to help decide.  I really just don't know where to go for something like this.  I have been putting it off for a long time because it's not as fun to spend money on something that is working, but who knows what issues I will have with it soon.

I seriously doubt I will go the High HP route.  is that sort of setup needed if I want to run 16x7 tires with about 350 HP  at the rear wheels.  Basically just a cruiser.  freeing up more money for the OD trans conversion???? The problem is I just put $900 into a 727 rebuild and install it has less than 600 miles on it.

Thanks for the options.  info much needed.  I will look into all these options.

Just go to reputable differential shop for the rebuild.  Your rear end, whether a Dana or 8.1/4, limited slip or posi, is nothing rare in the dif world.  I gaurentee any reputable dif shop has worked on them.

I wouldn't replace just what "looks worn".  And neither will a reputable shop   As said, a rep shop will know what to order, and will sit down with you and go over the kits needed.

The expense and time to get the work done right is worth having basically a new rear end that will prob outlast the car

I removed 8 3/4 axle and took it to a local shop  Cost me right at $1000 US.  Yeah, it hurt, but everything in it is now new and the axle had been repainted

are you sure its the rear end and not just a worn out and out of balance drive shaft?  That is a cheap fix and may take the vibration away.  Then you can wait on the rear until it goes bad.  You are not running a lot of HP, and a Dana might be overkill.

I did take the DS into a shop and had it checked and re-spun.  it was right on but they pulled the weight and re tacked a new one but it did not help anything.
