"Hidden" Engine Bay Wiring - Your Methods

I am starting with a clean slate on wiring and firewall holes with my car.


The factory engine bay holes [non-vitals] are going to be welded up, I will be using a stand alone ECU and custom wiring harness in my build. I'm curious to see where some of you have stuck your headlight/fan/horn wiring. I've considered through the frame rail, somewhere within the inner fender...how did you do yours? Would you do it that way again?  :working:

Inside the frame rail is a no go. There are two bulkheads inside of them where the K frame bolts on that will prevent you running anything through them. You could run them under the lip on the frame rail and put them inside abrasion wrap with some insulated clamps holding them up, but this requires the engine to be out to run and mount everything.

You also could run things through the inner fenders and along the outside of the inner fenders and go through the firewall that way. Make sure you fab a splash shield to keep moisture away from the pass through.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever put a mechanical water temp sensor somewhere else other than the intake manifold?

I moved my battery and MSD to the trunk with the fuel pump mounted to the drivers side of the tank, ran the battery cables through the frame rail to the engine bay and all wiring inside the quarter panel, along the pinch weld, and into the engine bay through the splash shield all wrapped in a black loom to hide/protect the wiring.  The headlight harness was ran inside the fender and through the splash also. I moved everything in the engine bay that I could down low on the firewall and ran the inside wiring through one of the grommets.  I was able to hide most but not all.

Well, I was able to run fuel hose through the frame rails on my 'Cuda clone...
Had to use a drill on one side, rimming internal holes....as the internal frame holes alignment was a tad off...

Just try inserting a hose from aft and go forward.... I guess you want to drill holes in front of rails ?
I used the existing holes on top of rails....

There is a hole in the very rear most portion where the frame rail intersects the cross member under the car. I pushed the fuel line in through there, I'm using hard line, not hose, because most racing organizations frown on extensive use of rubber hose, and I'm not willing to buy 20 feet of braided steel, which will fail within a decade anyway. There are a few holes here and there along the frame rail where I was able to view tube progress into the frame rail. The line was moving forward successfully, albeit with some manipulation, right until it came to the rear most K frame bolt, where it stopped hard.

There is a small hole in the top of the frame rail on the front side of the shock tower that I was trying to get the line to so I could then screw in the line adapter, so I was stopped about 2" short of where I need to be. After that, I did try feeling around inside the rail, which is not easy because the hole in the rail is only about 1" diameter, and sure as $h!t, there is a plate in there. It also feels like there may be a small square pass through in it, but too small and not easy to hit when you're manipulating a line from three feet away that is curving up the inside of the rail (its not a straight shot by any means).

Looking at the side of the frame rail in this location, I can identify 4 factory spot welds here, as well as similar welds by the front K frame mount. Peering in the front of the frame rail behind the bumper and through some other various holes, I can see the front most bulkhead, so I know they are in there.

Then again, my car is a late '74 build, so maybe these are updates to the frame that weren't in earlier models. I'd also be in the clear running anything in the rail up to the shock tower. Anything in front of it will present a difficulty, so I suppose I could move my fuel regulator behind the shock tower and reverse all my fuel log set up. Of course, this will fight for space with the heater control valve and associated heater hoses, so its going to make that corner of the engine bay somewhat cluttered, which is what I'm trying to avoid overall.


On a separate topic, Anyone tried putting a water temp sensor into a head casting plug instead of the intake?

In my conversion I (for now) am using factory bulkhead but made wire extensions for the starter relay and other items previously located on inner fender. They were wrapped in the nylon sleeve and tucked down along the inner frame rail.
Bulkhead will be changed/replaced when converted to fuel injection.

Digging up an older thread but, what do you do with your starter relay?

I mounted it under the brake booster down by the frame rail.

It has the Edlebrock chrome water pump and Powermaster alternator, although there are better ones out there.

Dfrazz, what about the mounting location of your voyage regulator? Also, do you remember about how much wire you needed to snake it from the trunk to the engine bay through the frame?
