Fiberglass T/A Hood
« on: March 29, 2015 - 11:42:36 AM »
Hey gang, just had a couple quick questions around T/A hoods.

About 15 years ago, we added the fiberglass T/A scoop to the steel hood of my 74 Challenger. Pic attached. It's worked SO GOOD for the last 15 years, but it's just starting to show signs of cracking around the edge She's due for paint next month, so I'm toying with the idea of replacing the entire hood with a fiberglass one from these guys, who I've heard good things about: https://www.aarqualityfiberglass.com/products/hood-challenger-1970-1974-ta-bolt. So my questions are these:

1. Has anyone bought a hood from these guys and painted it? How were the results
2. Is there a better manufacturer I should be looking at?
3. Will the hood lip molding from a 74 bolt on to this hood so that it aligns with the fender moldings?
4. The disclaimer on Year One's T/A hood springs says "Recommended for show use only". Do you run em all the time? Are there other options?
5. I'm guessing that the hood hinge is the same, and only the spring is different, is that correct?
6. Anything else I should be thinking about?

Thanks a bunch!

Also, does it take the same hood latch?

That's where we got my T/A hood and the quality is very good. We don't have it on the car yet so i don't know about the latch.

I got mine off a seller on E-Bay out of Texas I think it was. The stock hood molding worked fine.  No on the hood latch
( hood pins only) Besides I was ever so glad to get rid of that stock latch anyhow.... after I had gotten scalped by it too many times! Don't bother with the hood spring, they will bow the hood . I tried 2 different  T/A hood spring before I gave up and made this simple hood prop. Yep same hood hinges. Squirters are crazy expensive, but I did break down after a few years and bought them.

I will take a look when I get back over there but I think the AAR hood has a mounting point for the latch but it isn't pre-drilled.  I know the pins are marked but not drilled.

Donating your car to me?  :woohoo:

Very nice looking car. You wouldn't happen to have a higher resolution version of that picture would you?

I keep going back and forth between the dual scoop hood and the T/A to replace the flat hood on my '72. Seems like the T/A hood would attract a lot of attention. But it just looks so darn cool... :2thumbs:

Here's another supplier that might be worth checking out. I have no idea what their product and service are like but it looks like they have been around awhile:

I wish all the manufacturers of these would mold them in black. Mine is white? and so far it's been good but a stone chip would really show thru.

Notice on my (AAR Stinger) hood, the last 12" or so back toward the windshield taper in slightly. It is enough to be noticeable. Mine will be corrected before it is finished.

I bought my hood from AAR, and they painted it for an extra $100 and it looks and fits great.
My 1 complaint is they do pre cut the hood for factory center latch.

TA hood shouldn't have this as its held down with the hood pins.

First off, I dog the whole car, color included.

Second, I've heard good things about AAR as well. I was planning to go with them as well, but...

Third, there is a guy who makes the scoops in steel as well, and does a remarkable job. Not for the budget conscious, though.

THANKS A BUNCH GUYS! As always, I really appreciate the input.

The color is 1997 Viper Blue. It's a Spies Hecker paint, expensive as all hell, but shines like a diamond.
