how to change damaged wheel studs?
« on: May 14, 2005 - 07:51:17 AM »
Some A*& removed 4 of the 5 wheel lug nuts from the drivers side rear of the cuda while my kid had the car at the high school.
In driving it home, the wheel almost came off and damaged the 4 wheel studs.
Luckily we only live 2 blocks from the school.

How do I remove and replace the wheel studs?
Can I hammer them out with 3 lb hammer or will that damage the axle bearings?
Is there a tool for this?

Thanks for any suggestions, I would really like not to remove the axle.

8 3/4?
I don't know if there is a tool for it, but they come out the back easy enough.
Depending on how hard or rusted it is, heavy blows to the axle might screw up the end play.

Not hard to remove the axle. My suggestion is to do that, unless there is another way I don't know about.

Heat up the flange and you wont have to hit so hard.

I beat on mine a little and they started to move... if you can get a small gap on the back side, a pry bar might pull them out the rest of the way....

I'd find that little F'er and give him a good whooping!! :boxer: :spank: I HATE people that disrespect ANY car with a passion!! Some people just have the nerve!!

the studs will pop out with a single hard hit with a heavy hammer putting them in you really need to pull the axle & press or hammer them back

For putting the new ones in I have always just tightened the lug nut to pull the stud flush with the axle - is this bad?

it can work but may stretch the threads also it may not seat the stud fully & could loosen while driving

I've always used a big nut as a spacer, then used the correct nut to pull them in. Never had a problem with that method. And like Chryco said, one quick blow with a hammer always knocks em out.

thanks for the suggestions.
one nice hit with a 3 lb hammer and they came right out.
then used a long nut to pull them thru.
threads look great.
so easy I did all 5.
