Trouble installing mirrors
« on: April 01, 2015 - 06:40:09 PM »
First problem, I'm installing a new passenger side mirror. The previous one was not an ebody mirror so I have to drill holes to install the inserts that the screws go into. I drilled one hole, slowly increasing the drill bit size. First 7/32 then 15/64 and the insert still would not go in so I drilled 1/4. Now the insert seems loose in the hole and when I tighten the screw it does not secure the mirror to the door skin. What secures the insert on the hole? Did I drill too big? I have not drilled the second hole yet.

Next is the drivers side remote mirror. Where does the ring that guides the three cables attach to? If that's the hole it goes into, how do you get the little sucker in there? It seems reluctant to co-operate. I think it's the bottom hole in the second picture but I took it apart two months ago and now I'm not sure.

Do you have the tool to install the insert? The tool swells the insert so it fits tight in the hole. The plastic clip goes in a hole inside the door. Did it come with one clip or two? For some reason, I remember two. One went right were the cables come through the skin. The second went in the front of the door by the hinges.

I have no tool. Didn't know there was one. Where would I get one?

One plastic clip. The second picture is inside the front of the door. I think the lower hole is where I took the old clip out of but I don't recall for certain.

$55US. Ouch. Can you buy the mandrel to put into the pop rivet tool I already have? Are there any other options?

Use a nut and a bolt, wind the nut onto the bolt, screw the bolt all the way through, then holt the bolt and wind the nut down, use a washer under the nut, use the nut as a jack as such, pulling the bolt back through thus compressing the nutsert

If the car is not painted, after you compress the threads, you can put just a dot of weld on them to keep them from spinning in the future. It is known to happen. Just tap it and have a cold wet cloth to cool it off quick.

I did my Nutserts with a regular Rivet Gun. I found a nail the same size as the nutsert hole and that would also fit into my rivet gun. Next I turned the nail so the head of the nail was on the inside (back) of the nutsert, then I put the nail and nutsert into the rivet gun and inserted it into the hole, and tightened the nutsert, the nail will not snap off like a rivet will, so once it is tight a stopped and pushed the nail out the back.  Worked like a charm.

If you have a HF nearby, they have the tool as well.

I like 67vertman's use of the nail and rivet gun.  Genius!
