Pictures Needed
« on: April 04, 2015 - 04:44:46 PM »
Removed the front windshield, and drivers fender the other day.

Discovered some "fun stuff" aka rust holes filled in with bondo, and brazing.

Really thought I was going to get lucky and have a solid window channel up front. But going to bare metal doesn't lie.

Appears to have what I think is crash damage as well.

Any chance I can get some pictures of:
Drivers side windshield channel to cowl area.
Driver side brace from fender to "inner engine bay  structure"
Driver side Hood hinge attachment area viewed from the wheel side.

Need an idea of what I have going on and how it is supposed to look.

Thanks guys

Does LuLu's pictures work for you?

If you need more, just ask.

Lulu,

Thanks so much. I was real shocked yesterday when I discovered a real rusted front window channel in spots, in addition to the other problems.

Hard for me to make a repair without knowing what it needs to look like.

Question for anyone:
My drivers side cowl edge is visibly torn on one area, not horrible just the corner. On mine I have the ridge/valley that I see in the one photo, is there supposed to be a second "valley" that is nearly exact to the first? First thought was that it was crash damage. But given that it looks exact to the other it makes me think it is supposed to be there.

On the right side of this photo you will see a hole, probably 2"x2", over this there is a piece one metal which is soldered in the channel. It was covered in bondo so my thought is that this particular piece is not factory overlap.

Inner Fender to Cowl Seam/Joint. Supposed to be welded/attached solid?

Right off the head/top of my hammer you can sorta see that second valley that is nearly identical to the one closer to windshield. Tear is on the corner of the cowl near edge of this valley.

inner fender should be welded in 2 spots ....Tab on top to cowl and a flange turned into the engine buy the two rear hood hinge bolts see pic.

there should be a fish plate behind the two rear hinge bolts that hold the hinge nuts ...

good luck,

Ken

Ken,

Thank you for the reply. So that split between inner fender apron and cowl area is correct?

As far as the cowl goes, the tear I am referencing is right on the corner on the outside edge. I know that is either rust damage or crash damage, and I suspect it correlates to that second "bead" or valley that I am seeing.

Just hard for me to understand how it(the bead/valley) looks like the other one, but I am not seeing that feature in pictures of other cars.

While I have this going was hoping that someone could take a pic of their drip rails?

I was thinking that mine had pieces rusted away towards the rear side of the qtr window. It may be that the drip rails actually just stop there.

Really appreciate all the help everyone. Couldn't get this car done without you guys.

Well you just made my life easier. I anticipated that my DR were messed up because they stopped so far up on the qtr window. On both sides the roof area is also rusted out right where I thought the end of the DR would stop.

But mine match yours, so I can cross that worry off the list.

Thanks again for all the help and pics. I really do appreciate it.

Nice!  That does look like crash damage that someone pulled out and didn't weld up.   I agree with your assumption.

Yeah really disappointed about that. Dip area needs to be flat right? Really hope floor and rails are not jacked up horribly.

Yes the 2nd valley is not supposed to be there,  On my 73 and 72 parts car it was flat with a smooth corner ...
