Fuel Tank Filler Neck Grommet questions (and others)

I wonder if it is leaking around the sending unit lock ring , some new tanks do not seal well there

But is the sending unit on the driver's side?

Going counter-clockwise would load the right side of the tank, not the lft side, so it's got to be on the right side area.

He does say gas is getting into trunk area between the fuel filler trunk floor seal.  The fuel grommet is just under that.

Thanks for all help, hints and advice.

I got motivated today and just decided to drop tank now.  Took only about 4 hours with draining tank, breaks, and clean up ... and being careful ...     Great directions here I found in other threads ... really simple ... valence came down no prob, rest easy peasy ...

Below are some pics of grommet and tank.

When I removed the filler neck ... it would move up and down with almost no force ... I could move it down and back with one hand like I was waving a pencil ... and after I dropped tank about 6 inches, it pulled out will very, very little force ... and take a look at what grommet looked like.  And what's with the plumber tape?  Is that normal?

I didn't muscle or force or twist it, just a little firmness and pop .. it was out.  And that just about tore it in half .. and look how almost rotted it looks.  And looking at outside of tank .... it has to be this grommet.   In pic I did above, I had wiped the grommet ... but look at staining above it after removal ...

Someone mentioned if it was backwards .... in pic below with me holding it .... my hand is on part that was inside the tank (wider diameter than other end) ... is that backwards?

Also - someone asked about vent ... that was my first thought .... but its a 70 so only has filler neck vent (no other lines but one on sender up to pump - and its for sure not there .. that side is dry as bone all time) which dumps inside the rail right of tank ... no fuel was leak there.

I am getting grommet tomorrow .... anyone have pic of it properly installed in tank before putting filler neck in ...

Oh ... btw .... I didn't wipe down or touch the tank in those pics ... I dropped it with wife working jack .,. then picked it up and walked it to porch to finish draining rest .... that's how new and clean it looks .... just stains around filler neck

PS .. for our friends up north .... label says tank was Made in Canada ... made my wife smile (she from Ontario) ....

looks like you found the problem , a new seal should fix it , most are reversable

Good to know you found it and an excellent reminder those things do rot out.  Probably ethanol making it rot faster.  Just my guess.  Will have to feel up on my grommet to see if its hardened.

If the filler neck is hard to push into the new grommet, you can put a little dish soap on the neck. It will lube it enough so you can install it easier.

Would you use any fuel-rated gasket/sealer on grommet where it marries with tank?

Glad you found it and are replacing it! The place you bought it from must have only filled the tank with a few gallons or just ignored the fuel leaking?? 

It had less 1/4 in it when we got it .. then first few times I didn't fill it completely.  And it had plumber tape in it ... my bet is whoever installed it may have nicked it getting it in tank .... and ..... well .... short-cuts never really work in the long run ....

Plus (hard to see in pic) but you can see on gasket that is appears to have torn over time ... aging/colouring .... I think this time when I filled it, then really started getting on it on highway ... it just blew it out big enough identify immediately.'

Funny thing (and something that I should have picked up on) ... the car would sit a week +/-, then I would at least start it and go around neighborhood or let it idle a bit in driveway .... but gas gauge seemed to show significant decrease .... I just figured "well, its a 7mpg car" .. lol

BUT - whenever I would get under rear of car, I could faintly smell gas ... not a lot ...  so ...... it was evaporating through this tear as well .... just another hint I should have picked up on that there was a point somewhere in system beyond normal vent  ....

AND ... finally irony of this tale .... had one expedited and GUARANTEED to arrive today by 930a .... by noon I call FedEx (wtf!!!) .... it was put on a truck that broke down .... didn't make it to LAX in time ...  ... then she asked me what was being shipped .... 

Should have it tomorrow

It doesn't make sense to have the larger flange inside the tank; I'd put the smaller one in first, myself and as mentioned, a wee bit of lube helps things go in smoothly- heehee. You say the bride's from Ontario, eh? There's a bunch of us from Ontario here; what part was she from if you don't mind my asking?

She is originally from Toronto (North York/Don Mills) .... left in late 80's but her son (my stepson ... but son) lives up in Barrie.

Not sure if we are getting up there this summer since plans are for them to come here (and Vegas with us .. lol) ... we were up there last Fall to see Leafs and Bruins play  (sorry -  )  Grew up in Boston playing hockey up through college ....

It seems there's lots of Canadians here ...       .... beer and hockey ... and Mopars .... just can't beat that ...
