Yes it has an electric choke; I do push it out of the garage to start it but it never quits running rich no matter what I do.

Does the choke open fully? Cause that will damn sure make it run fat & blow black smoke...

Yep, it does open fully, and I just adjusted it so it opens faster.  I now have two edelbrock 1406s; I thought the first one was bad so I bought another one.

Ok, I do value your advice.
I want it to run smoothly from idle so I see I need the vacuum advance.
.
thanks.
Not true ,having more advance at idle is very helpful & all the engines I tune run better without it connected .
Before you buy another carb this is a free fix try it !

I fell for the advertising that said just bolt it on and drive it.
I have read all the Edelbrock tuning instructions and it makes my head hurt.

I will get the Proform 650; they are about $420 from various parts places.

Some things in relation to these two snips above; While any carb can claim to be a bolt on and go, the variables in altitude, air quality, engine specs, season of use, and driving habits means they ALL need tuning. Similarly, if tuning instructions for the Ebrock make your head hurt, the Proform is not going to be a whole lot easier on you either.

Your Ebrock is too rich. You can tune it down quite a bit for $20-$30 worth of parts. Simply putting bigger rods and/or smaller jets in it would be a good start. However, the drop from a 750 Ebrock to a 650 in the Proform, means some of your issue will be solved immediately, but you will still having tuning on the Proform to get it dialed in.

Similarly, you also want to make sure your ignition system is in top shape as well so it has a good chance of firing off the mix you are putting in it.

Did you try going a step down on your metering rods? Thats what I did and it helped.

Sorry, I meant to say, Vacuum secondary; not advance. I know about that.
I have already screwed the vacuum advance in as far as it goes and I think I have deactivated it, but I will also disconnect it.
HP, my Edel 1406 is a 600 cfm; not 750.
What is the difference between the 1406 and 1806 models?
I was going to get a rod and spring kit and try that first since they are $40 and it might save me 400. I do fully understand how to do it, I just don't want to.
All components of my ignition system are new; it is a matter of getting them to work together; as I said, the car runs perfectly well, smooth and strong; just has a bad exhaust; it actually doesn't bother me; it is my wife whose panties are bunched up.

Keep in mind that the new cars have a lot of pollution control on them and the old ones didn't. When I first got my car three years ago and I got a wiff of the exhaust I said to a friend "I kinda forgot how they used to smell".

the METH gas just plain stinks! I run a little turbo blue 110 octane mixed in and find the smell way less offensive. :dunno:

I know they don't smell like roses; I started driving way before any pollution controls were even thought of, and all the gas had real lead in it, but maybe a little better. I searched today for a rod and jet kit but everyone around here has only Holley kits. I guess that should tell me something. Anyway, I will try .095 jets and .073x.047 rods.  Standard is .098 and .075x.047.  Not much diff is there? If that doesn't help, I will spring for the Perform 650. Unless someone sends me one first.

Honestly, and this is just me. But I don't think much will change.
Carbureted and no pollution control stuff. I just don't think much change will occur. Sure a lean mixture adjusted better will help. But burning raw gas with this setup is a "nature of the beast" sort of thing.
Again, just my thoughts.

And for a motorhead like myself, than music to my nose.

I just want a little improvement; I have Power Wagons, M37s, and a WW2 Jeep and none of them smell this bad; and they are about as primitive a fuel and ignition system as you can get.

I'm a little confused- and that's easy to do. Are you saying that the car runs rich ALL the time? That it smells of unburnt gas ALL the time? That's a different kettle of fish than an idle-only deal.  :dunno:

Your not changing much if you swap rods... On the idle step the jet & the rod keep the same relative relationship.. It leans out on the power step....   I'd swap the jet & leave the needle, that would lean out idle & cruise....  :2cents:

As far as Cudaman Tom's comment about these being old cars & won't get any better I say bull****... If you do the tuning you can get them close... It's never gonna compensate for weather & altitude like EFI but you can get it very close..
