Magnetic pickup gap question
« on: April 19, 2015 - 02:04:49 PM »
Looking at my reluctor gap its uneven.
Went to adjust and noticed that the plate that the pickup is mounted to moves (wobbels). Meaning that just grabing the pickup by hand and slight twisting motion I can change my recluctor gap from 0 to prob .010 or so  :clueless:

its a brand new firecore dist. and yes the adjusting screw is tight. The whole Mounting Plate moves not Just the pick-up bracket.

is this right? I would think it should be fixed?

The plate is moved by the vacuum advance arm.  It sounds as if something is not quite right and it allows the plate to wobble. I would talk to Fire core and see what they suggest. Something is wrong. I have seen it on factory units that were worn

You can do that with any vacuum advance dist I have seen , you can bend the bracket that holds the pick up so it is even & set the gap with no pressure

Have you ever looked at what Ford did?  One time when the light bulb actually came on...  Instead of a small post that causes reluctor gap to vary they rotate the pickup plate on a sleeve around the shaft... More stable, more accurate... A better design...... Sometimes what Chrysler engineers design baffles me...

Guy's thank you for the validation,
I was able to get thru first fire seemingly ok.
But noticed the movement as I prepare for the second start up of the fresh motor.

I'll streighten out the gap and set it at a natural state.

Awesome support... :ylsuper:
