'70 or '71 Hemi vs 440-6

Disclaimer: I own a '70 6-pack Challenger but never have had the "privilege" to ride or drive a Hemi powered vehicle.

For those of you who have actually driven both a '70 or '71 Hemi powered vehicle, AND a '70 or '71 440-6 equipped vehicle, is there really that much difference between both engines? 1/4 mile times, HP, torque, etc. seem similar, yet whenever anyone talks about the Hemi, it is so highly revered, aka nicknamed the "Elepahant motor" and the 6-pack does not seem to get the same respect.

The Hemi starts slow , a 6 pack will leave it behind off the line but once you are rolling look out the Hemi will be catching up & Fast , the Hemi does live up to the hype but not light to light

The Hemi will have top end and should come around the 440 and the end.

The 440 will definitely have the down low torque and beat the Hemi out of the hole.

These are generalizations but you get the idea.

Having owned both, back in the day, the Hemi seemed to be harder to work on and it was more trouble than the 440+6.

I have a 440 and never owned a Hemi, but man, the look of that Hemi in the engine bay is awesome, not to mention the name, "HEMI".  :bigsmile:

I have watched this at the track a few times , the 6 pack gets out front but at 1000" on the strip the Hemi is coming with a 15 MPH edge

Top end power is Fantastic.
PITA to work on for sure.

Recently, I just had my OEM valve covers heated, and slightly modified to clear the larger aftermarket valve springs. Clearances inside are that close. 

Came out great. You can't even tell.

That's the kind of things you do if you put a bigger cam in.

NOTHING is more impressive than a HEMI under the hood. I've never driven one but raced a Hemi Road Runner and beat it with my 440 six pack Challenger. Hemi's cost ALOT more and unless it's all out drag racing not worth the price. A good 440 will do everything a Hemi can on the street at half the cost.

Having owned an original 71 Hemi Challenger & a couple 70 440-6 Challengers my thoughts are Hemi's impress everyone who looks at them... And yes the top end charge is impressive... But in spite of that I have no desire to own another Hemi.... I'm not into popping my hood & trying to impress people, I'd rather get it out & drive... Like I said the top end charge is impressive but every time that Hemi got to 6,000 RPM's I'd get a knot in my stomach worrying about what could go wrong & how much $$$$$$$$ it would cost to fix.... No nothing ever came apart but I rarely spun it up that hard.. I know a couple guys who've had their Hemi's past 7,500 on a regular basis... But they both have a much bigger hobby budget than I & it has cost both of them plenty to play at that level...

Currently I have a 440 based 505 stroker... It cost less than a third what a Hemi costs, makes gobs of torque & since it quits breathing around 5'500 RPM's I get my speed fix without much to worry about...

No doubt $ for $ a 440 is a better deal , you can make it di more then most will ever need & the cost up front is much higher for the Hemi , But it is a Hemi !!

Quite a few people find a 6 pack impressive also.  Not as much as a Hemi, but impressive.

What always hurt the Hemi in the street car crowd was the inability of most owners to keep them properly tuned. Most that you ran across back in the day were still running the same tune that came from the dealer. They rarely if ever kept the valves properly adjusted, they never tinkered with the carbs and step up linkage to get them to work better  --  they did good just to change the spark plugs and oil. Most owners didn't understand the Hemi's needs. You have to stay on top of them to keep them running up to their potential.

The second issue that hurt the Hemi's was the cubes under those heads were too small to take much advantage of the higher flowing heads and better valve layout. To make them perform, you had to make them rev. That's when they wake up  --  RPM.

To illustrate my point:

440  --  stock #452' flow 264 cfm at .500 lift
440  --  stock #906 flow 270 cfm at .600 lift
440  --  stock #518 flow 295 cfm at .600 lift

And:  426 Hemi  --   stock flow 355 cfm at .600 lift

With that information you can see that the Hemi heads need one of two things to perform up to their potential:

Cubic inches under the heads OR rpm with smaller (426) Cubic inches.

Back in '72 I had a '70 383 Roadrunner 4 speed that I used to race at my local drag strip. My buddy had bought a new '70 440-6 Super Bee that he raced there too. He beat plenty of Hemi cars. For the money the 440 is the way to go. But, and it's a BIG but, like they say on the Dodge commercial, can you say HEMI?
