What have you used for sound deadener / insulation?
« on: April 23, 2015 - 09:12:09 AM »
Hi
Guys,
What are you using for sound deadener and insulation for under the carpet and headliner. I'm getting close to the final install of each.

What are you using? How much is needed? Where do you buy it? How much should it cost?

Thanks
Tom

DEI Boom Mat Under Carpet Lite... It's ability to stop engine heat getting into the car is amazing... It does a good job with noise but my main concern was heat, making the car more comfortable on long drives & the difference is amazing...   I bought a single 48"x 72" roll for about $90.. A few slices to help it contour around the trans tunnel, those areas I filled the voids with trimmings from the rear area & taped it together with aluminum type duct tape... I also used two layers of the typical bubble type product available at the local hardware store under the rear seat..

closed cell foil covered insulation,  easy to work with, inexpensive
along with some epdm roofing material, glued to floors and roof.   works similar to more expensive priced stuff

I just got through doing my car with this product. http://stp-atlantic.com/ It is the stuff high-end stereo shops use.  Cheaper then Dynamat and just as good.  easy instillation and no smell.

I used FatMat. Got it on ebay and cheaper than DynoMat.

I thought it went in pretty good. Just a little labor to roll it once laid out.

I have nothing to compare to but it did make a big difference than without it.

Ok, I may as well chime in, how many of you out there have used a sound deadener in your restorations? Not sure but I do not think any sound deadener was used originally, would this negatively affect the car if a person was restoring to original if they added a little sound deadener? Maybe just under the carpet? Thoughts/suggestions/comments?

thanks

What's under the carpet shouldn't matter on originality, unless it's rust.  :2cents:

I bought Dynamat when it was on sale at Classic Industries and Reflectix from Menards. My car was hotter than hell !!  In fact there was about a 4" section between the top of the carpet and the bottom of the heater box that had exposed firewall showing. You could not hold your hand on it.

I laid the Dynamat everywhere throughout the car. One box for front seat forward and one box from there back including doors. I then laid the Reflectix from the front seat forward, the doors and behind backseat.  The car is not hot any more, the doors close with a thud instead of a rattling crash and radio volume is 1/2 of what it was.

I just finished up yesterday on my floor insulating project. I used Dynamat Xtreem and installed Reflectix on top of that. I cleaned and painted the floor first with black Rustoleum paint so that the Dynamat would adhere well and stay flat against all of the bumps and curves in the floor pan.
I want ahead and replaced the carpet at the same time, that was the hardest part of the job. I think I have about 16 hours in the whole project, if it cools down this sweat box of a car it will be worth every bit of the time and money I spent.

I used eastwood yesterday . 1 kit $119.00 almost the exact amount with a little left . Still have to put carpet and seats back in . Not looking forward to lining up the holes but will make things work . Had good luck with other Eastwood products in the past .

Just went for a test ride. LOVE it like everyone says . Car is quite , sounds more solid ,And most of all no heat coming up from the floor . Best money I spent in a while . I can't tell you how many times I didn't take the car out because it was too hot . :cooldancing:
