What to do with the Member List?
« on: April 28, 2015 - 10:27:24 PM »
About a year ago the thread with the membership list ran out of space. At that point, some members who had put their names of the list were left off. At that point I looked into having a database function added to the board, but apparently there's nothing to do that function, so we're stuck with a list, or lists.

I've been thinking about this off and on since then. The best idea I came up with was to divide the existing list into several smaller lists. I posted a trial run of that idea earlier in the month for comment. People seemed to like it, but a couple of other ideas came up:

1 - There are a fair number of inactive members on the list including people who have barely posted and then never come back. Some folks have suggested deleting the list and letting current members repopulate it. I'm concerned that  that would tick off some people who've already entered themselves once.

2 - The next issue was keeping both lists, but having only the newer version active, while the old version would be archived.

I'm not comfortable doing any of these without getting some comments. There have been a few comments already in the other thread, but I think we need to get a larger sampling of the membership to see what people really want.

Feel free to ask questions or post comments below.

I say you can split the list and archive the old list, but I would split the list by last log in date. Any one who hasn't logged in -in the last 6 months or year aren't really a productive member and can re-sign up again.

I think it's very impressive for a web site to have a huge member list, but when only 25% of it is active....then what's the point.

The old member location list includes members who haven't been on here for years....I say dump that old list and lets see how many active members we have :2thumbs:

I honestly don't know why we don't just start over. It could be a current member list.

Occasionally we see someone come back on after being away for a while. I say start a new list with only those who have posted in the last year and archive the old list.

The idea about keeping only the people who are active is a good one, but very time consuming. There's no way to automate the process of checking member's activity levels. So, unless someone wants to volunteer to check all these, I don't think it's gonna happen.

One of the reasons that we haven't gone forward with anything is that there hasn't been a lot of feedback. I'm going to arbitrarily say that I'd like to see at least three dozen votes before we did anything drastic like delete the old list (or not carry it forward to the new list). The people who are voting seem to be in favor of that or archiving, but there just aren't that many people voting.

I think it's cool, but maybe it's because people just don't care. :dunno:

I think you're probably right.

I'm not sure what you mean....My thoughts were to start the new broken down lists.....and the active members would sign their perspective list ? Other then starting the new lists with a "sticky", nobody else should have to do anything :dunno:

I think it would be a great way to account how many active members we have as well  :worshippy

I think that if a person signed up a few years back and only made a few posts then it is a safe bet they have moved on.
I know I don't post as much as I used to due to other issues and health but still check in regularly.
Of all the sites I used to be on this and one other (a truck site) are still going strong because of the active members contributions.
Keep up the good work.   :woohoo:   :burnout:

Archive the old list with a sticky at the beginning of the new list.

I like the list.  When I go places I look to see who is close to where I am going.

I like the idea of having a regional grouping of lists.

I will be on the list when you figure out what to do.

I agree as well...and while we're talking about updating...is there any way to add a "thanks" tab for posts?

:iagree:

I'm thinking if you haven't been active in (a year maybe) delete. Trims the list and opens up handles that someone else may want to use.  :dunno:
