What would you think or do?
« on: April 30, 2015 - 10:03:08 AM »
Last week after we had a bunch rain I came home to find this (first 2 pics). Obviously the mail truck had driven though my front yard. So I went out and dug the grass and dirt back to where the tire tracks made a mess. It did need to be cleaned up anyway. Then a few days later I noticed it happened again (no pics this time) and it was just the corner by the driveway got cut though. So I went out and bought some reflectors on stakes and put them along the edge of the grass.

Yesterday I come home to find this ( last 3 pics). The driver cut the corner and ran over one of the new reflectors and broke it.  Now I'm a little pissed. So I call the post office and try to complain. The lady (b*tch) says she just spoke to the driver and she (the driver) said she didn't even deliver mail to my address. Bull sh*t! We got mail. Then ask how I know it was the driver. I said it was obvious the driver cut the corner and drove over my grass. Then the lady (b*tch) says since I didn't see the driver how do I know it was her. Now I'm really pissed. So I said "fine, I'll drive a steel stake in the ground. Let’s see her run over that!" and hung up.

I found an old weight bar, you know about 6 feet long and one inch thick solid steel. I painted it white and drove that in the ground. I left about the same amount sticking out that the reflectors have. Drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the top and put the reflector on it. Now let’s see what happens when the driver tries to run that over.

Anyway what do you think? Did I do the right thing? What else could I or should I have done? Love to hear thoughts on this one.

If it's your property...I say spike strip :2thumbs:

We have regulations here about the distance the mail box can be from the edge of the road. Judging by the white edge line of the road, your box is a lot farther away then your neighbours, (for good reason)....It's easy to see why the lazy post-person drives on your lawn...still doesn't make it right. :pullinghair:

I don't see why. I see people put brick pillars at the ends of driveways all the time.

I'm on a slight curve in the road. Still no excuse to run over the lawn and the reflector.

I would put a large decorative post on the other side of your driveway so she has to go around, or move your mail box to the other side of your driveway :dunno:

Where I grew up, we had curbs.  Where I live now, there are none...like yours.  I don't like it.  It looks messy.  I live on a corner lot and every year the snow plow tears up the corner lawn.  My neighbors to the back of me have people over a lot and use the side street to park.  There are always tire tracks in the law like your pictures.  I liked your reflector idea.  It's effective and non confrontational.  I might have to look into that myself.  As for the broken light, I like the decorative post idea.  A medium sized pillar of brick on either side of the driveway would do it.

I thought about moving the box out some. You might have a good point to move it to the other side of the driveway though.

I wouldn't want any one to get hurt if they hit a brick pillar. In a battle between a 1" steel post and a car, the car is going to win. But it will not go away without some damage.

I would put a huge boulder at the edge of the yard/street. One of those decorative looking boulders that's too heavy to move without heavy equipment.
It will look pleasing and compliment the yard and not be some pole sticking out of the ground.

Like I just said, if some one missed the curve and hit the boulder or anything really big and got hurt I would feel bad. I needed something that would not hurt anyone, but make the point to not drive though the grass.

Edit: I tried the reflectors and she (I'm assuming it was the mail driver) ran one over. What I did next was replace the 1/4 inch fiberglass pole the reflectors come on with a 1 inch solid steel pole. It looks almost like the other reflectors only on a thicker pole.

My Grandparents had an issue like this once. Gramps put 4" diameter steel tubing into the ground, 4' under, 2' above, spaced 8' apart. Put half round anchors on each tube and hung chain made of 5/8" wire diameter between the posts, then filled the posts with concrete.

That was 30 years ago. They have since passed on, we've sold the house and its been through several different owners, but that fence is still intact and hasn't moved.

if they cut the corner and hit the boulder, they deserve it. Im sorry but when I drive, I look around and actively avoid hitting boulders
