problems with wilwood brakes hitting valve stem.
« on: May 03, 2015 - 12:33:24 PM »
Put on a set of wilwood 6 piston brake conversion on a 71 chally, I have a set of 17" coys rims.  The darn valve stem is hitting the caliper when it rolls around.  Couldn't believe it.  Has anyone dealt with this.  I thought maybe I could get a 90 degree valve stem.  Could I have the old valve stem hole welded and then add a new where it wouldn't hit?  Suggestions??? Anyone have these brakes what wheels are you running on them.

The valve stem is on the inside of the wheel?  :dunno:

Yeah, that was my question too. Can you post a pic?

Yes it is on the inside behind the spoke.  There is about a 1/2 inch gap between the caliper and the rim.  Hate to buy new rims.

I was swapping over from a 4 piston SSBC disc brake to the 12.88" 6 piston.  The ssbc's have been frozen up since I have had the car.  Rotors just have rust on them.  Don't look like they have ever been working as far as I can tell.  Rotors basicly smooth with new pads.  Been working on the car for about 5 years haven't ever done anything but drive around the block.  Has disc on the rear when I put a new rear end in about a year ago.  So it looks like I will have to buy a new set of rims for the fronts if I want to use the Wilwoods.  I looked at the Torq Thrusters and you can see the valve stem would be out of the way.  But that is $400 something dollars.

This is what I was thinking of.  I will have to call and see how tall they are.  They would have to be less than a 1/2" in height.  This seems like the simplest fix and sure hope it  will work.   Thanks

They are going to have to be less than a 1/2" tall.  But the 90 degree was ones appear to be common on motorcycles so maybe someone will make one short enough to fit.  I don't like the alternatives

If it's possible, why not drill the wheel on the outside for a valve stem, then just plug the inside hole ?

Could you weld it?  If not how are you going to plug?  I thought of this to but not sure how you would plug the old hole.

The valve stems that I showed in an earlier post could be installed upside down to plug the holes  :dunno:
