440 which headers???
« on: May 06, 2015 - 04:27:01 AM »
Hi Moparfriends!

I am from Austria and my 71 Challenger R/T is 99% finished. The only thing I need is a set of good ceramic coated headers for my 440 with stock cylinder heads! Now I have two different stock manifolds on it...
My mechanic said that TTI are the best way to go but is there another good way? TTI are very expensive...

Thanks Moparfamily... :2thumbs:

Regardless of what brand you decide on, I would buy an exhaust kit in the same brand. I had bought Hedman HPC headers years ago and recently used them. I liked the fit and finish but had some work to do to get the different brand exhaust to match up with the collectors.

:iagree:  They fit perfectly and look amazing!  You will forget the extra cost soon after you install them.

I did the whole TTI kit, headers, mufflers and exhaust pipes, ceramic coated.  Pricey yes...worth the money?  Defiantly.

Thanks, these are on a small block 408 stroker and I know you are looking for a BB which is why they may look different.  These are 1 3/4" step headers with 3" collectors polished ceramic coated with a thermal barrier (# TTi 340BE-C5).  I bought the whole 3" h-pipe set up from TTI (#XE30HW-CH).

Went with Doug's on my 440. Matched up well with the Magnaflow 2.5" x-pipe exhaust. Only issue I had was the copper exhaust gasket I first tried didn't seal well. Used the thick gaskets made by Remflex and they worked perfectly.

I have also the Magnaflow exhaust system and how do you install them? Do I pull the engine up?

To answer your question about installation of headers - mine were loosely attached to engine when the engine was mounted on the k-member outside the car. Then engine/transmission/k-member was bolted to car as a unit. If you already have engine installed (which I assume you do), maybe someone else here can give you some advice as I have only done it with engine out of vehicle.

It is a tight fit with not a lot of clearance between right header and right shock tower, but it does fit.

I bought Hedman Elite ceramic headers for less than half the cost of TTI. Fit perfectly with no problems. HOWEVER, Brads70 has the exact same headers and did have problems. Are the cars that different, or is Hedman inconsistant in the bends? I don't know.
To me, for the price of TTI, almost a grand, a mechanic should be included to install them.

I went with Dougs on a 383 in a Challenger, and have found them to be very good.  I used copper gaskets, and tightened them again after the first run and about 30 minutes of cool-down, as instructed.  I don't drive the car a lot, but I've checked the bolts occasionally and they have never needed anything else once hooked up properly.  No leaks, no cracks, no pinging noises. Coating is holding up very well after 6 years and about 8k miles.

Several good products out there.  The makers vary the tube routing so look carefully, see if you like the routing, and check into clearances for things like mini-starter, tight-ratio arms and boxes, etc.
