Newb Intro - 1970 Challenger in Hawaii
« on: May 06, 2015 - 08:01:03 PM »
Aloha everyone.

I've browsed the site for some time, but have finally registered now that I'm *actually* working on my car (and not just letting it sit). I needed to get it running (and stopping) so I don't have to push it out of the carport to work on my other project (the 1977 VW Rabbit visible in the background). So far it has taken a new fuel tank and sender, new section of brake hard line, a new body-to-axle soft brake line, MSD (box/distributor/wires), new power and ground cables, some lug nuts (pretty sure 2 lugs per tire wasn't factory spec), and a good pair of safety glasses.

I spent a good bit of time yesterday working through the fender tag decode, and it has me scratching my head. It calls out the two-tone paint (blue body, white roof), and a black side stripe. Anybody see something like that before? Seems like an odd choice.

Anyways, it's a 318 (which runs, but water mixes with the oil) and I'll be putting in a spare 318 once I get it rebuilt. Fender tag says it was a 3 speed manual, but there's a 4 speed in there now... regardless, I'll be pairing the rebuilt motor with my Tremec 5 speed sitting in my shed. Then I'll probably have to sell a kidney to get it body and paint work. Long term plan is for it to be a driver.

My greatest moments of joy have been hearing it run for the first time, and the look on my girlfriend's face when I was "testing the rear end for Sure Grip" in front of the neighbor's house.

Welcome from CO!  Great looking Challenger!  Do you know the history of the car?  Was it originally delivered to the islands?

Thanks for the welcome. It has firewall rust holes, and a couple other through spots, so it looks a lot worse closer up. The windshield needs replaced, too (it had duct tape on the cracks when I bought it). The interior is turning to dust, but the floors and trunk are solid. I added some pictures from the tank swap. Thank goodness for all the manufacturers out there making replacement parts!

As for the history, I'll have to dig out the title and see if I can tell - it was last registered in 1989. I had been eyeballing the car since I graduated from high school (back in 1991), where it was in a garage on blocks. Some other guy bought it, sat on it for a little while, and then flipped it to me in 2008. Life kept me from working on the car until 2014, but I'm really happy to get it underway.

Aloha and welcome!

Curious ... where you stay? I lived for years in Mililani until I moved to the mainland in '04. I miss it every day :faint:

When I bought it, I thought it was originally a vinyl top that someone stripped and painted. I never realized that they did a factory two-tone until I looked into the fender tag. Learn something new everyday.

Hawaii is a hard place to keep something metal from turning to rust, but these cars sure have a lot of metal on them. I will definitely be asking questions.

Aloha and welcome!

I live on the East side of the island, in the Kaneohe area. There were a couple nice Mopars in the central Oahu/Mililani area.

I'm a few years away from the car being ready to cruise, but it's a goal I'm working towards. Hopefully by then we'll have a dragstrip again, or at least a ferry system so we can race at the strips on the other islands. Oh, and the car has a Mr. Gasket shifter in it... it took me a while to figure out how to get the car into reverse, and I'm still trying to figure out who previous owner was racing with a 318 and a Dr. Pepper can hose clamped on the exhaust piping.

Congrats on getting the car running and welcome to the site!

I have to thank my Uncle for motivating and helping me, and my neighbor for loaning me the tools.

Neat car, lucky that roof was painted instead of vinyl.

Good luck and welcome!
I've got a '70 as well and was just decoding my fender tags for more information.  I think that your question on the black striping refers to the V5X code, which some sites call it black striping and some call it "Black Mouldings - Protective Insert Body Side".

Looks like a fun project.  My wife and I moved from Waikaloa to Florida.  Rust is a problem In Hawaii, but it is just as bad here.

Ah, the windward side. Most beautiful part of the island. Loved Kailua Beach Park! Best beach on the island imo.
Cheers!
