Upper ball joints
« on: May 07, 2015 - 03:21:32 PM »
Have the firm feel upper control arms with moog ball joint.  Boot won't stay in and I have the front end tore apart for changing the brakes.  So I thought I would go ahead change the upper ball joint.  Firm feel Dennis suggested the Spicer joints.  Where can you get them.  He also said the moogs have changed their design and may work better now.  Any suggestions?

Were you able to snap in the boots on the moog joints.  I did mine two years ago with moog UBJs, and I recall it being incredibly difficult to get the boots on.  Once they are on, they are not going anywhere.

I used a scrap piece of exhaust tubing to "snap" the boot in place on my Challenger.  That was with stock stamped steel UCA's though.  The tubular arms might be designed differently and might not allow the boot to "snap" in place.  The SPC UCA's I have for my Dart are thicker then a stock arm.  The UBJ doesn't protrude far enough out of the arm for the boot to attach.  I might try to glue the boot onto the arm so I don't end up with grease everywhere.

Upper control arm is on the car.  This apparently is a older Moog design.  the boot goes on the inside of the ball joint.  Newer ones slide over the outside.  I can push it back in and it feels like it snaps in place.  After 10 15 seconds slowly just pops back out.

What I used was the ball joint socket upside down with the washer. It went right on and went snug when tightening the nut.

Is this the type that slides over the outside of the joint.  Mine go inside the joint.

Did you do this with the control arm on the car?

You put the upper ball joint in the upper control arm then put the cover on and tap it in place with the socket for the ball joint?  Is that correct?

Ball joint was screwed in. Moog with outer boot.

Take socket open end with boot going into socket.
Stud goes thru drive hole. Put nut on and start tightening.
Use washer.

It may take a few trys for it to seat.
