Cooper Cobras anyone?
« on: May 08, 2015 - 08:54:10 AM »
So I cannot seem to find my beloved Firestone Indy500 tires anywhere anymore. Doscintinued.

Anyone using Cooper Cobras?

I had Coopers on an SUV of mine and I loved them...picking up some Cooper CS5s today for our mustang....and the same shop can sell me a set of Cobras (in my 275 60 15 and 235 60 15 sizes) for Just under $600 installed with roadhazard etc.....damn pricey but.....

I have also seen people using "mastercraft", a secondary brand made by Cooper. Both are made in the US.

I have a set of 4 Firehawks P235G6014's on rallye rims I would sell you if you were closer. But I'm in western Ontario and the shipping would probably be killer.

Thanks Dodj.....actually I have aftermarket 15" rims I am in love with already plus I run bigger ones in back....but thanks anyways!

I came across "Mickey Thompson Sportsman ST" tires......online.  I like their look better. Anyone use these? Would have to find them locally....

I've had a couple of sets of Cooper Cobras, one set on a 98 Dakota company P/U that went 70K.
Last two sets of tires I've purchased are Coopers, I've been pleased so far with performance.
I recommend the  Cooper Zeon RS3-A if they have in your size.....

Have them on a Challenger and a friend has them on his Cuda.  We both like the tires and have had no problems with them after several years.  Jeff

Interesting comments, as over here in Europe almost everybody considers Cooper Cobras as low end poor performace tires. Especially in rain.
Last year I went to a show in light rain, and approaching a traffic circle with rather low Speed (30?) I almost crashed while braking gently as the back end wanted to overtake the front. A few hours later a Cuda hit a tree with the same tires. But ofcourse they are the cheapest WL tires and if you insist on WL, you either take Coopers or BF Goodrichs in the lower price segment. All others cost a fortune. Well, this is all spoken from an european view... I guess you got a bigger selection of WL tires over there.

But to be fair, I had no handling problems on dry surfaces so far.

Just my humble 2 cents  :)

I currently have G'Year Eagle ST's on the 73...but there's very little tread life left.  I have been leaning towards Mickey Thompson sportsman.

Not much different over here as nearly all 15" tires are considered low end cruiser tires. There are only two decent speed rated 15" tires that don't cost a fortune, MT SR and Maxxis Marauder, and they certainly aren't UHP tires. All others are S and T rated hockey pucks that look good and perform fair or they are dedicated drag tires that don't have strong enough sidewall for great handling or enough tread depth for inclement weather.

I personally wouldn't determine (speed-) performance being a matter of rim size, as 15" are still more or less standard on modern mid-class-vehicles, that probably reach higher speeds than a standard average ebody.
I'm not a racer, the difference I see is the grip and handling during normal ways and conditions of driving.

And I really don't feel very comfortable going anything faster than 70-80 mph with the Challenger, and this only on a straight Autobahn without traffic :grinyes:. No problems with any other car though. Of course I don't forget the age difference, but if braking is extremely different on dry and wet surfaces I blame the tires for 95%. I would even bet any standard Goodyear, Dunlop, Continental, Michelin etc. would perfom better on a Challenger compared to the Cooper Cobras - but - do they suit an ebody? I guess everybody has to decide that on its own.

As far as I'm concerned i probably will get me some really good, tested, well handling modern tires as soon as I either get another set of rims or tear down the Cobras... They may not really fit an old car, but I can arrange better with that rather then scraping off my car from the next tree.  :angelwings: :violin:

You are correct that there are modern vehicles that still use 15" diameters wheels. IMO, the problem with these tires is that they are only available in widths that range from 175-225. In other words, way to narrow to really provide effective grip on an E body that needs 255-305 sized tires. As such, a UHP tire in 205 still won't grip much, if any, better, than a 295 T rated tire  with 300 treadwear.

While speed ratings are only part of the formula that determine a street tires potential performance, typically better performing tires will have higher speed ratings, lower tread wear ratings, and higher temperature ratings. Most muscle car sizes are lacking in at least one if not two of those categories. Race tires are a whole 'nuther story.

Stateside, the problem with Goodyear, Dunlap, Continental and Michelin is the same problem I stated above. None of them make a really good 15" diameter tire in a width that will fit nice, look good, and perform well on an E body, or any  classic of the same era.  All of them did at one time, but that time has passed. The market is basically filled by half a dozen companies, none of the above companies are included in this group, producing tires that look nice, but have no true performance built into them.

Don't understand all the whining..... about any tire out there is many times better than what we had when these cars were new...
