Hood Insulation Look
« on: May 12, 2015 - 02:09:10 PM »
We just put on the hood insulation in 72 Challenger.  It is the correct design as specified from Year One.

Why is the large air hole off center?  Or did we get the wrong piece?

Please see pic.  Thanks.

Not sure but I bet the hole should center over the top of the air filter. The engine is a few inches off center, toward the passenger side of course.
I never see the pads anymore.

You live in Florida. You don't need insulation.  :roflsmiley:

Doesn't the pad protect the exterior paint on the hood from the heat of the engine?

Cars with fresh air hoods and shakers didn't use the insulation. I think it was probably more useful as a sound deadener.

Hood insulation was part of the undercoating package.  It was more for sound deadening than anything else.  You couldn't order it separately.  If the car came with full undercoating on the bottom side, it also came with under hood insulation.  Most cars got the molded hood pad like the picture shows.  Some got a generic "die cut" pad.  It must have been a vender change.  I pulled the original insulation off of my hood and don't remember it being molded at all.  I put a die cut pad back on the car.  I've since seen a couple survivor cars that also have a die cut pad.  Most will tell you the molded pad is the correct one.
