Interesting thread- as a guy who walks on both sides of the consumer/shop line, I see many variations. The current going door rate we pay in most of southern Ontario runs $55-57 per hour and $30 per hour paint materials. The paint material world seems to be schizoid and you can pay sometimes 10 times what you can buy something similar to, for the same purpose. I recently bought a ltr of base for $69.00 mixed and yet, I've seen bills, from suppliers, where they've charged $600 for 6 oz of a custom tinter or pearl. If you're stuck believing that only the big name paint companies make decent product, you're in for some big bills. But, I bought 3 ltrs of base and a gallon of clear and a gallon of reducer, for under $250 for my son's truck and it went on like jack the bear and looks great. The cost of materials is bad and getting worse, but to say you need $15,000 for materials is, in my opinion and experience, nowhere near reality. I understand people have to make a profit to stay in business, but somebody is getting screwed at the $35-50,000 range for a paint job. To be fair to both sides though, custom fitting a car for the size of gaps some people think necessary, IS a big, time consuming, PITA job; so it won't be cheap. Thank God, I'll do my own!
