Installing a Hemi is a really tight fit!
« on: May 23, 2015 - 10:41:48 PM »
I wanted to start a topic on lowering the chassis onto the Hemi engine already mounted on the K member.
Dropping the body onto the Engine/trans assembly.

The clearances to drop the body over the engine on each side for a Hemi and clearing the apron shock tower is really really close. I'm talking less than a quarter inch on each side.

While lowering the body, it can easily end up hitting on either the driver side, (power steering box side) or the P/S side rocker hitting the shock tower.

It happened to me today and scraped a little paint off on the bulge that protrudes out.
Not a big deal, I'll get it blended in later.

I just wonder how in the hell did the factory put these behemoths in without hitting any paint surfaces?
The only thing I can come with to wiggle these in under such tight clearances is by tilting the engine assembly on the passenger side.

If you are experienced in getting these in, and do it like it's the size of a slant 6, I'm all ears listening.

I have done 1/2 dozen this way , no issues , aftermarket covers often do not fit , 2 people 1 adjusting while the other is lowering , , lifting one side of the engine does help too , piece of cardboard or duct tape . .....

I should have my alterkation in a few weeks and then i will be in the same situation, i have the tall after market covers and doing some measuring im 1-1/2 too wide. I would rather install it without removing the cover/covers so i am going to build a cart that will allow me to tilt the alterkation with motor installed up on one side or i could possibly just tilt the motor up on one motor mount and keep the k-frame level , and also i was going to use two engine hoists one on each side of the car so i can tilt the car the opposite way just enough to clear the covers then level everything out and connect the k-frame. I know removing the covers would be easy but it is all sealed up nice and i did not want to disturb it. not saying it will work but i am going to give it go anyway and if not then i guess i will take the passenger side cover off.

good idea on the cardoard.

what do you guy's think?

Thx Bruce

Instead of using cardboard which will tear, use bathroom shower vinyl wall covering panels.
