73 318 air cleaner?
« on: May 25, 2015 - 05:44:07 PM »
Anyone have a picture of the factory air cleaner on a 73 318 Barracuda/Cuda?   Trying to figure out if the (single) snorkel, if the side of the snorkel had the straight angle or a hump on it?  Also were they semi gloss black?

Thanks.  From the looks of it, the air cleaner was gloss black.  Always thought they were all either semi gloss or (on the 70-71 340 cars) wrinkle finish .  :clueless:

Looking that pic over.... :clueless:  Wonder what determined the color and type of brake booster?  I have seen some with painted black boosters that are smooth and others that are plated with the notched areas?

There was two suppliers of brake boosters. Bendex and Midland Ross. Bendex boosters are crimped together and always painted black. Midland Ross boosters are held together by a band clamp and always gold cad plated. :2cents:

So it just depended on what the person grabbed off the shelf when a car down the line, I guess?    I like the plated look better but I am going to stick with how I got the car....a black Bendex booster.... :walkaway:

Also I noticed in a thread that you posted in (on the B5 72 build), about the windshield area behind the dash being black.  My 73 is also black in that area.  So it likely was not a 70-71 only deal.   But I did notice the black did not cover the entire lip between the defroster vents (see blue circle). This is the fun part.  Trying to trace all the little details and get as many back on as possible.  :2thumbs:

All I've ever seen OE on a '73 is the Midland Ross

Not sure exactly what mine came with from the factory.  The broadcast sheet was shredded (if it was even the right one for the car) :smilielol:  and obviously the fender tag is no help on those.   But here is the way I got the car.  Looks like the factory sticker residue is still in place (not usually on parts counter parts).

Already done and have it back from him!  :2thumbs:  I saw no indication the booster had ever been plated though? :clueless:  Like I posted above. It appears the Mopar decal was still visible and there was no plating under the paint on the booster?  I would think if the booster had been swapped out at some point, it would not have the decal residue?

Your picture shows a Bendix(crimped together) booster.  Black is correct for that booster.  The Midland Ross booster is by far the norm for 73.  I've seen a few 73's with the Bendix.  My guess is that there was some sort of supply problem with the Midland Ross boosters and the Bendix needed to be used in its place.  What is your car's SPD?

As far as what black is correct.  As far as I know, Chrysler NEVER specified that a part should be semi gloss black.  All black parts were GLOSS.  However, the paint they used was very cheap gloss black.  The color was never as glossy as what we have today.  That's where all the confusion started.  Some parts were "dipped" in cheap gloss...others were "sprayed".  It's possible that the "dipped" parts had a different gloss level then the "sprayed" parts, but Chrysler never intended them to be that way.  I had my air cleaner sprayed gloss black.  The pulleys and K-member were "dipped" from the factory I believe.  On those parts I used a semi gloss.  Eastwood's Extreme Chassis Black(satin) is a great color and has the correct look IMO.

Next time you see a car with a Bendix booster, find out the SPD and keep track of it.  Maybe you can find a pattern.
