I am trying to get a reference to where the harmonic balancer bolt sits in the engine compartment. I know that it sits 2 1/2" towards the passenger side. I just need a vertical reference from the frame rail. I recently installed an Alterkation k-member without the motor mounts. I am using elephant ears welded to the frame. I do not have an original k-member to use that measurement. The old k-member was a tubular one that I cut out that was installed by a chassis shop years ago.

If you have the room I'd center it?  It was only offset because of the steering box.

Missunderstood your question on my 451 the center of the crank sits 1.35" below the top of the frame rail.

I have a Lakewood bellhousing on an 833 and I have the motor as high as it can go without any major massaging of the firewall. I put in the z-bar and it is level. I am probably close to the vertical height I was just checking before I weld in the tabs for the elephant ears. I do not much room to move the engine closer to center with the z-bar and header clearance.

If your car is an original 4spd. I would assemble motor an Trans with the Trans properly mounted in the rear crossmember. Working from rear forward will ensure proper mounting and also proper placement of shifter. Unless full custom I would retain the offset engine placement.  Imagine the shifter being another 1 to 2 inches closer to you.

I thought I read that it was also offset to help minimize driveline vibrations. Am I making this up?
