2" drop spindle recommendations
« on: May 30, 2015 - 02:27:34 PM »
Ok, getting down to the nitty gritty "last few" upgrades I think my baby needs. I have it lowered a little much up front (I like it that way), but it hits the stops too often, so its time. I have 17x8s up front with about 4" backspace, and an otherwise oem type front end.
What are the best spindles that will bolt right up, without costing too much, and maybe while Im in there, maybe I should replace a couple of the Moog joints too, just because I'll have it all apart. Had it on a lift and was cleaning things up this morning since a friend of mine is rebuilding the tranny. The 2nd gear synchro was shot, so he's redoing it. A couple pics attached.

Thanks

Thanks Alan,
btw, you said you were interested in what interest my tribute car has for sale. I have it listed on CL and carsonline. Craigslist has been much more productive, but I have had two cash offers from guys in the $50k range. I countered both, and "tentatively" accepted an offer in low 50s, but then he vanished. :dunno: So just waiting to see what the continuing summer season brings. In the meantime, I will continue grooming the car.

Thanks again.
I think I will order those spindles with the ball joints. Predrilled in case a future owner wants to add willwood brake kit.
Those tubular UCA's look interesting too, but not needed for now. Rebuilding tranny and spindles. Thats enough for this summer. If I still own the car after summer, then maybe upgrade the crappy stock seats with leather and some extra bolstering.
Then, I probably wont want to sell the car!
Next summer.... frame connectors and torsion boxes  :burnout:

Ride quality, and safety.
I like the lowered stance, and I only have barely more than an inch of clearance before it hits the stops. Potholes and bumps are not fun. More like...bam!
Didnt you put nascar spindles on yours?

Gotcha.  If you have the stock rubber stop you can replace them with shorter ones.  :money:

I thought about that and looked at em close, and it doesnt look like I would gain enough room even if I removed them.

You can install 1/2" thick bumps stops to gain you another inch of travel. You might also find that a thicker torsion bar will help a lot too. You have to be careful with drop spindles. If the wheels have too much back spacing, the tie rod will hit the wheel when drop spindles are installed.  Measure from the tie rod to the wheel lip and see if you have enough clearance.  Basically, the wheel is going to move up two inches. If the tie rod is inside the wheel right now, you'll probably have issues. Larger torsion bars would probably be less expensive, decrease your suspension travel while giving you a nicer ride.

There are only two options out there, the cast steel Magnumforce units, which are also sold through other dealers, or the welded plate Fatman units.

Bump stop changes, t-bar changes, and frame notches are the other options.

Ok, I figured for $15 shipped the .687 inch stops from summit should be my first try, instead of $500 for the spindles and joints
Thanks for the suggestions.
Btw, I have 17" rims and acceptable backspace, so I have more than enough clearance for the drop.

I've got drop spindles for my Dart.  I'm going to run 18's in the front but I'll be limited in back spacing even with 18's.  I might only be able to fit a 7" wide wheel on the front.  17" wheels could still be a problem if you don't measure first...
