Electric choke wiring question
« on: June 08, 2015 - 01:22:33 PM »
Hi Guys I can't seem to find my old threat but it's a simple question.

Just wanted to make sure that for my electric choke carb install that I can grab power form the positive side of the coil? I had asked this already and thought " I will remember that" guess who forgot?

anyone have a quick answer? I want to finish this up tonight.

I looked online and Edelbrock has a great video that tells you to wire it to the accessory panel.

i thought I could use the wire that went to the carb. Glad to see that's not a option.

Is the fat wire on the right the mysterious blue wire I want to hook my carb upto? I just cut the wrap off my wiring harness and this is the only blue wire anywhere near the carb/ coil area.

there is a blue 12v feed to the Ballast resister , alt field & ECU , tap into the blue feed wire somewhere , coil voltage is dropped to 6-7 v while running so not the best place to connect to

I'm colorblind so almost all the wires going to the ballast resistor are grey. Wiring is tough for me. Try to not get too annoyed I certainly appreciate all the help!

I hate to do this but I will take another picture. That or I need to get someone to tell me all the Colors or pay someone.

Okay took 2 pictures, one of the ballast resistor and one of the back of the alternator. You talk about an alternator  feild wire, I do not know what wire that is so if you can tell me what wire on both items you are talking about I can easily trace them back.

I do have a wiring diagram before I get told to buy one but it's hard for me to use lol.

on the left side of the ballast resistor you have the blue wire going to one terminal & there is a jumper to the second terminal so you want to tie into one of those wires  , being colorblind & trying to do woiring would be rediculously tough , at least you are trying to make it go .
 Glad to help out  :2thumbs:

So I can tap into either of the wires going to the top left had side of the ballast resistor (in that picture).

Just in case I wanted to go for aesthetics and wanted to use the alternator field wire, which one is that? the harness that holds that wire is going to run right beside the choke.

You should have a blue wire close to the carb if you are using the stock 74 engine harness.  The factory choke thermostat has an electric assist.  There is a blue power wire in the harness that runs across the passengers side valve cover.  It should have a female spade terminal on it.

ON the 5th post with link to photo, isn't that the one you are indicating?  Looks like there are 2 wires in that female spade though.

My 73 only has one wire at that location.  It's possible in 74, they used that spade terminal to run power off to another accessory.  Yes, that picture looks like it's the same location.  I didn't look at the link before I posted...

Burdar I actually referenced that picture on my ipad while I was looking for this wire. I can only assume that the wiring harness is original but I am not positive nor am I sure what has been done to it since I am the 9th owner. But that picture in the 5th post is the only spare wire I have in that area, it's blue it's a fairly thick gauge wire that was found bound up into the harness. Does anyone have this specific information for a 74?

I guess to test if it is a 12v source I can just put the battery back in and put the ignition to the run position it's likely the battery is not at a full charge right now since I used it to do a compression test. I would love to just shove a spade corrector in there and use that wire lol.

I figured out what one is the alternator field wire so I can always use that.
