What to do with my project, details inside.
« on: June 14, 2015 - 03:22:11 PM »
Hi,

Basically it comes down to I'd like to talk to a few members on here about what direction to go with my 70' Challenger R/T. If you've got a few minutes chat via PM, I'd greatly appreciate it.

See post below.

Thanks

No need to PM.  Lets here what your thinking.  The more input the better.  Lots of people here have first hand experience with what to do or what not to do.

A lot of what I would do...depends on a few things first.

I need info on:

What shape is the starting vehicle in? Bad (lots of rust) Okay (needs some body panels/ paint/ interior/ mechanical) good (running/ driving/ just needing a refresh) or Great (good mechanically/ Paint/ Interior) just wanting a better driving experiences.

Is the cars numbers matching and mostly complete?

Is it missing (engine/ Transmission/ body panels)

Is it a rare car (R/T- U code -V code- Convertible- Shaker / rubber bumper car)

after looking at these issues then I would decide what way to go.

So, for a car needed a whole redo and not rare. I would probably go resto mod, newer motor, trans, and updated suspension.

A good car and desirable motor and color combo - Stock all the way.

First car -1969 Road Runner 383 4sp

Current ride - 1970 Barracuda 440-6 4 sp Dana 60  (4:10)

You buy me a Hemi & I'll think about it... Otherwise Say No to a Hemi...  And I use to own an original Hemi Challenger.... Hemi's are for guys to pop the hood & shout "Look at Me".... I'd rather be hauling ass down the road...

Ok here we go its now open to all! Though I may put a flame suit on just incase.

So off we go! I've got myself non-numbers matching 70' challenger R/T, currently sitting as a rolling shell. The body itself was sold to me in great condition, but upon arrival to my friends house he inspected it on my behalf. As I am currently stationed overseas, well for another year. Anyways come to find out the 383 had a Krylon rebuild and there was lots of issues the seller didn't note. The pictures will speak for themselves, for example it had a hacked in sunroof, bodged frame repair, firewall split from the drivers floorboard to name a few. Outside those issues the car is fairly solid rust wise, some pinholes in the floor and the rear quarters could use some attention. But on the plus side the front end has all new metal. If I recall a fair amount of the key parts are there.

The car is nothing to special i.e. not "V" or "U" coded, but it had a fair amount of options. Ill try to find a pic of the fender tag.

*zips up flame suit*

So here's the possibilities with the car.
Full resto: Done by my high school friend after seeing his 70' Charger and work on an insane Cuda build. I decided restoration would be the route with the car till I discovered the issues. To me a nice restoration would be cool but I feel I'd honestly be afraid to drive it. Not to mention its not worth it financially.
Resto-mod: Another option that has been suggested, and may lean more towards. Maybe something along the lines to a tribute to what the car was. I kind of like the idea of a satin or flat paint on it. Something not to show but something I won't be afraid to play with. Engine wise likely a 383 or 440 with a 727. Though I do have a nice four speed console...
Road kill: Yes that road kill, I like the idea of a General Meyham build. Keep everything basic and run it as is, no frills just an engine and body. Plus it would end up in Alaska at some point so that could be fun.
Cut my losses: I hate to say it but this may be an option also, after I got initially hosed buying it I lost some interest in the car and couldn't visit the forum with out getting worked up until recently as it's getting closer to the project starting.

Last thoughts, to add to the mix. I will be moving to Alaska in a years time so moving a bunch of cars around will be a pain but manageable I think. Granted I'm not opposed to selling off my classic mini, as I have a buyer lined up anyways. There is a chance I may or may not buy a house while up there. And lastly and most importantly the wife has said do what I want. That may be a trap, come to think of it its likely a trap. lol

Thanks for you time and look forward to your thoughts. Also standby for photos.

-Andrew

First of all, there is NO right or wrong way to go.  It's your car.  Only YOU can decide what's best for YOU.

A non #'s 383 car isn't anything rare or something that will be worth big money if done completely stock.  If you really like stock restored cars then fine...go for it.  I think it's more a candidate for a resto mod/pro touring build myself.  Since you don't have the original engine/trans, you don't have to worry about modifying a highly valuable car.  Make it what ever you want.

There is also a lot to be said about just making it a safe driver and enjoying it.  These projects always seem to snowball.  Once you start one project, you find other things that need to be done.  Before you know it, the cars been apart for 10 years and your out of money.

 :iagree: with everything said above.

If it were me, I would look at this link:

Lots of great ideas there.

I am more of a resto-mod kind of guy.  I think you need to sit down and think about how you would use the car and go from there.

Good luck.

:iagree:  The most important decision is the 1st decision - pick a direction and stick with it.  The worst, most time and money wasting situation is switching in the middle of a project which causes you to undo things that are already finished.

Hmm: I was going to tell you to sell it then I looked at the photos. It looks pretty good actually. What to do is really a personal thing, I like my cars to look like they are a year old with a few mods but looked after by a careful owner.
