Day 3 Sunday July 5th
On the 5th we start our journey, beginning in North Carolina heading into Tennessee.
We've made arrangements with the Sidney James Mountain Lodge for the 2nd leg of the journey.
Sidney James Mountain Lodge
610 Historic Nature Trl,
Gatlinburg Tn.
(865) 436-7851.
Let them know you're with the Mopowered Tour. They have been kind enough to reserve the hospitality room for us as a gathering place as well. Tons to do in the area as well as some great driving roads getting there and around town.
And let's not forget Floyd Garrett's museum. Experience one of the largest & most incredible collection of American Made Cars in the nation! See 90 cars worth over $8 million! YES! Mr. Floyd Garrett will open the doors to his famed Muscle Car Museum and offer preferential parking for our rolling Mopar Car Show. Always the host-with-the-most Floyd is a nationally known "muscle car" expert.
http://www.musclecarmuseum.com/The Gatlinburg area itself is nestled at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in America. This little car-town of 3,944 residents is dedicated to welcoming all of its guests with a taste of Appalachian hospitality at its best.
http://www.gatlinburg.com/Just 100-miles from our start in the mountains of Western North Carolina, this short-run will be a fun filled trip through the Great Smokey mountains, lots of twisties and great photo ops for the both car-owners and MCG magazine. We plan a day-trip to the "Top of the Smokies" for those that feel 100-miles is simply just not enough……
Day 4 Monday July 6th
We take both the high and low roads en route to Blacksburg Va for the evening. This will be a fairly long driving day. Approximately 250 miles but, we're not taking the interstates. Our route will take us on mainly back roads and some small highways unless of course we decide to cut our own roads. (Don't laugh, its happened before, although not over the top of a mountain range).
We're having a pool party and some R&R for the evening.
We've made arrangements with :
Days Inn,
3530 Holiday Lane,
Blacksburg Va. 24060.
540-951-1330.
They have set aside a block of rooms for us to be together and have given us their blessing for hanging out around the pool and the parking lot and enjoying ourselves. Their only request is no glass around the pool. Gave us a great rate as well.
Day 5 Tuesday July 7th
We will be taking a good bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway with a stop at The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford Va along the way. This is approximately a 200 mile day in total but worth the stop at the Memorial.
The hotel is :
Days Inn Waynesboro.
2060 Rosser Ave.
Waynesboro.
540-943-1101.
Pool and/or Parking lot party that evening! They are going to put us all together on one side of the hotel so all the cars will be together. We're working on something for the evening as well however, the establishment is in the process of changing ownership and until that is complete we won't know if they will be able to accommodate us or not.
Day 6 Wednesday July 8th
Stop 5 of the tour on July 8 will be in Manassas Va.
Our route from Waynesboro will include Skyline Drive in its entirety. (There is a $15 per car fee) While this is not a long day mileage wise, Skyline Drive is a beautiful 2 lane road across the top of the Shenandoah Mountain range where if we're lucky you might see some of the local wildlife going about there business. The one thing to remember is that the speed limit is 35 mph and it is enforced so be careful. There are literally hundreds of scenic views to stop and take photos. This ones not a drag race.
We have made arrangements with:
Red Roof Inn Plus.
10610 automotive drive.
Manassas Va.
Call 800-733-7663.
Our block code is B192MOPOTR. $68 plus tx.
A lot of us will be attending the Kid Rock concert at Jiffy Lube Live THIS EVENING. He is, after all, the proud Son Of Detroit. Rock has taken us out on the road and….to the party. Where he's going tends to be a lot of places and this time it's to entertain Mopar folk at the Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia! HE SELLS OUT FAST so, if this interests you, get off the couch and go get some tics, CYA there!
For those who do not wish to go to the concert, we are 5 minutes from Manassas Battlefield which is a great stop for you history buffs.
Day 7 Thursday July 9th
As we wind into the tour, our trip from Manassas to Camp Hill will include a few stops along the way. Overall about 150 miles total for the day.
Thursday Morning, The NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax Va.
Founded in 1871, The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) is an American non-profit organization whose primary mission is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, especially the right to keep and bear arms.
Expect a "private tour" that has been scheduled for a 9:30 start for our group. It will last about an hour and then there's an hour to look around on your own. The museum is located approximately 18 miles from the hotel but there will be traffic as Rt 66 is the main corridor into DC from Va so allow an hour or so to make sure you get there on time.
Our next stop is about 15 miles from the NRA museum. We are going to stop at the Udar-Hazey Air and Space museum on the grounds of Dulles Airport. This houses part of the Smithsonian collection including an SR-71 Blackbird (as seen in the Transformers movie which was filmed here), the Enola Gay and The Space Shuttle Discovery among the many artifacts. This museum bleeds Red, White and Blue pride. There is a per car load parking fee of $15 however the museum itself is free. They have parking for over 2000 vehicles and they stated will be able to find a parking area for us only as they are not busy on a Thursday morning. We have made arrangements for a Group Tour specifically for us, which is slated to start at 12:30 and will last approximately 2 hours. The tour guides are all volunteers and for the most part they are all veterans of various wars.
Our final stop this day will be at Gettysburg Battlefield. Remember, we're in no rush so take your time and reflect on those that gave their lives many years ago, and those that continue to do so everyday, to allow us the freedoms we currently have.
Thursday night will be a well deserved wind-down night and maybe car clean-up (there is a car wash station provided) at the Camp Hill Radisson. We will be there for the remaining 3-nights
