Any update on this bad boy? I was thinking about this truck yesterday

Hey, well I did get it stripped and in the garage, saved what I thought I would need  and got rid of the rest. I tried to load a couple pics. But seems they are to big and I'm not sure how to shrink them on the I pad,. There are some pics on fortrucksonly under heading  L- 700 at home

Hey Laramie, yeah I have seen that one , the cummins fits in there nice.

The guys on roadkill just released a video of the big truck that they shortened:

Can't believe I missed this thread. I have been going down a similar road; picked up a D700 with a 360 AT and very large Rockwell rear end. Wanted to make a car hauler out of it as well but somewhat stalled. I am have issues with the brakes and finding parts and information is a pain. When I got it, the brakes somewhat worked but found out that the MC was leaking, after a lot of research I found a replacement as the same "type" of MC was used on IH school buses. Got one, then the front brakes began locking up. Called a guy in MA who is knowledgeable about Dodge chassis (think motorhomes) and he tells me that the MC is unique to Dodge even though every book cross references the IH part and that it will not work. Well, since I had already dropped $200 on the MC I took it apart along with the old one, they are identical internally. I know think my front brake issue is something else that resulted from when I actually filled up the fluid; something like the wheel cylinders sticking out (when you touch the brakes, the front grabs hard and doesn't release, but will over time). So now I am thinking it needs new front wheel cylinders (2 per wheel) but are one sided and I am having problems finding them. I think that a normal 2 sided wheel cylinder kit of the same bore diameter will work but am not sure.

Other issue relative to making a hauler is how to get the bed low enough to load and unload it. Will have to be a tilt bed.

Hey 70chall440, the master cylinders may look the same but you may have a residual pressure valve behind the line fitting. Do the front brake cylinders release immediately when you crack the line fitting loose? If so, you have a RPV in the master And it has to come out it is just a ball and spring and is usually behind the cone fitting. I've used a screw type dent puller to yank that cone out but it may mess up the cone so only pull it if you have a RPV that you want out. They are usually used on drum brakes because the spring pressure overcomes the line pressure but it sounds like your RPV pressure is too high. Might want to shorten the spring.  Also may hold pressure if your master cylinder push rod is too long and not letting the master get back to the released position.

I do not know if there is a RPV in that MC or not. I do not have a schematic of it although I am looking. that would explain a lot. I know the rod is not too long as I have spent some time focused on that.

If I pull that cone out, I am concerned it will be unusable and that would make the whole effort moot. That said, it is unusable as it is so I guess it doesn't matter.

I meant to add that I don't know if the brakes release, because at the moment there is just me and I have not jacked the truck up and locked the brakes and then tried to crack the line, but it might be worth the effort.

A simple way to check is to see if you can push a piece of welding wire or thin wire up the hole in the Ferrel, if it goes straight through then you do not have a line pressure valve fitted, if it stops just inside the hole you have one.
I have had to remove many and if you use a small "self tapping screw" in the hole and pull the Ferrel out with a pair of pliers you shouldn't damage the Ferrel as it is not in there very tight. Then just push back in. Hope this helps.

Don't forget to check the clearance behind the piston and brake pedal push rod as was mentioned in an earlier post, it should have about 1/4" clearance as measured at the brake pedal.

Sorry, didn't go unnoticed; I know the pedal is good as I installed it twice yesterday.

Well you guys had me excited as a RPV would have fit the problem, alas this is not the issue. I checked the old MC and the new one, neither have a RPV in them (either port). So, now I am back to where I started; trying to figure out what is going on. This is compounded by 1 1/2" left handed lug nuts that haven't been off anytime lately. The only other possibility I can imagine is that somewhere in the system there is a valve malfunctioning. The truck does have 2 boosters (one for the front and one for the rear), inside of them is a check valve; it is possible that the check valve for the booster servicing the front brakes in hanging up. I guess what I can do is jack the truck up; hit the brakes to see if the fronts lock up/drag; then start cracking lines to see if the line at the booster allows the brakes to release. I have it in my head that it is the wheel cylinders but they are much harder to get to. This thing is driving me nuts. I have to remind myself that his is a mechanical deal and not some possessed demon truck.
