Car hauler build

Can't wait to get this home in the yard, Going to turn it into maybe a fifth wheel trailer hauler. diesel powered with air ride suspension, I will have to get rid of the rear axle and the front as well and put  more modern equipment in there so i can have disk brakes and can run some alcoa aluminum wheels with maybe 4 super single tires? maybe silver with red interior?, ramp truck would be cool but would leave the car exposed. i don't know feel free to throw some ideas this way. going to shorten it to an 89" wheel base from 129" as they did come that short. also it has all the chrome, grill headlight buckets and all the badging Pierre pulled it off the truck but will be included

That's going to be cool!

Last year I was out on a jobsite measuring a building for roof trusses.  There were at least a half dozen 70's Dodge semi's on the property.  The owner said he has used every one of them over the years.  It would be awesome to make a hauler out of one of them.  Good luck on the build!

Hey thx burdar, they are different but cool. they have a international there as well. the old semi's are quite unique for sure.

Ahhh Cummins for sure  !! you could do a 5.9 or 8lt with a 8 spd , or a 15 speed Eaton RR or an international 466
Why not do a covered tilt deck alum walls & roof would be easy , roll door on the back  , one of a kind !

hey, yeah my buddy is a heavy truck guy me not so much, but i think he mentioned some of the same stuff you just did lol. yeah going to have to do some sketches for sure, that would be cool. Its a 361 i believe and it looks like a L-700 by looking at the data plate.

THe 5.9 or 8 lt Cummins is an industrial engine so with the correct belhousing you can bolt any trans onto them , I have seen them in mid size trucks with 8 or 15 speed Eaton RR trans behind them , but you need an air compressor to shift the Eaton trans .
 The 466 International is a great mid size engine also , very efficient & vitrualy any trans can be bolted up .
 It looks like it has a split diff also , you might be able to change the hubs for alum wheels & retain the diff but swapping might not cost much either .
 Air ride is the way to go .
 They use the bigger 8 lt Cummins in Motorhome pusher chassis & they have lots of power , the 5.9 tweaked with an 8 speed should pull a 5th wheel with ease or with a flat deck should have lots of power .
 Can't wait to see this get built

hey Chryco,

There is some info on the data plate, looks like an eaton rear it may be possible to get rid of the hubs somehow and run the alcoa's. once i get going at it my plan is to completely strip it down blast everything and build up the chassis. on the cab i see some of them came with corner windows so i may look at adding them if it's not to much of an issue. the mirror on the pass side got twanged and broke the window it looks like it just pulled the top of the door out enough to break it as there is not much of a frame there anyway should be an easy fix. all in all a pretty solid body with a few issues.

Go-fish, they are pretty cool for sure.

Yeah that would be cool alan, I am just thinking that if i build a truck that i can pull a 5th wheel trailer with, i will have the option to just bomb around in the truck on it's own although like you and chryco said it would be cool to have a aluminum covered ramp style truck (with some windows). I have some thinking to do

Seriously, cool truck! I would leave it as a 5th Wheel and shorten it as planned, its a classic just the way it is....
