Help, keep blowing MISC 20A fuse when I open the doors
« on: June 20, 2015 - 08:23:38 PM »
Just installed my dash as the next step in my restoration.  I keep blowing the MISC fuse when I open either door.  I have the wiring diagram, all looks okay - but I'm not an expert.

I've tried isolating the dash harness from rear, front and same issue.

Pulling my hair out - would like some fresh ideas.  Everything else appears to work although my turn signals don't blink, just solid on.  Maybe the flasher is bad - not sure if this is a related issue as I see the same pink wire from the MISC terminal appears to go the turn flasher.

Sigh- someone gets me the answer and beers on me!!

It seems that you have a short in the dome light circuit. What model and year is the vehicle ?

I tried disconnecting the dome light, at least the tail circuit from the rear harness, same problem

Ok, tell me this - the two yellow wires that come from the door pins and end up at a barrel connector behind the dash, where do they go?  Have a bad feeling I had them connected to the wrong place - had them connected to the red tri plug (always on power).  I tried disconnecting them and of course I'm not blowing fuses when I open the doors anymore.

I think your right. I'll ck the wiring diagram to confirm. If they're connected to the constant hot, you will blow the fuse due to the door switch grounding out when the door is opened. It makes sense.

The door switches are grounds, as Chryco pointed out, the lamps need a two wire connection, power goes up, through the bulb then grounds either through a door pin switch or through the headlight dimmer switch when the knob is fully CCW...  If you plug power to the door switch you've created a dead short... Be glad the fuse prevented further damage...

Thanks guys.  Think I figured it out.  I disconnected the yellow wires behind the dash that are mated with a barrel connector from hot (red, always on) and left them open.  Now when I open the doors the dome light comes on and no blown fuse.

Think those yellow wires are meant to go to an optional courtesy/map light which I don't have.

I think I'm there!! I think...

Thank you all for chiming in
