440 port and polished heads
« on: June 20, 2015 - 10:21:59 PM »
So I recently acquired a 440 big block for my 73 challenger. I tried searching everywhere but have not had much luck. I am in search for aluminum heads that are ported and polished. I can find just aluminum heads but not ported ones. can anybody shed some light as to who may sell already ported aluminum heads for my 440? or am I going to have to just buy the aluminum heads and have them sent to get ported which I really want to avoid. just don't want to deal with paying shipping to my house then having to pay shipping it somewhere else.

Thanks I am debating if I should buy aluminum heads. or just port and polish the ones that are on the 440 right now.

What heads are on the 440? Open Chamber? Closed Chamber?  Fully ported 906's flow about what most OOTB Aluminum heads flow... Plus they are open chamber so trying to build a quench motor is complicated...  There are plenty of good heads available for Mopar big blocks these days from mild to wild... And little reason to put a bunch of money in a set of old iron heads.. :2cents:

not sure, the guy does not remember what were on it. just that the block was ported to 11.5 to 1 compression and that the heads were converted to stage 3 heads. soo I am just probably going to drop it in then dyno it and see what kind of hp/tq i am working with. the guy said it should be putting out about 500hp to the  wheels. its a six pack as well.

I agree. I am just going to purchase the stealth heads non ported for now. from what I am reading the aluminum intake and exhaust ports are bigger than the stock heads that come on the 440's.  plus it's light weight. maybe later down the road when I get more money I will port and polish those suckers.

Since its all about flow, whatever heads you decide to port/polish should also be matched to whatever intake manifold you will be running.

why don't you start by checking the casting numbers on the heads to see what they are?

Then you can look down the intake ports and see if the heads have been worked on?

Yeah I think I am going to do that. reading a bunch of mixed reviews about the stealth heads... when I get home going to read over the spec sheet and see what's what. will post them here later see if you guys have any opinions on the matter. I really appreciate your help and input fellas!!!  :2thumbs:

So check it out peeps! This is the spec sheet I got from the old man.

its been bored 4.350 .30 over
 11.5:1 comp ratio
Cam dynamics 7000+ cheater cam with .467/.483 lift duration is 352/380
as for the heads he said the machine guy turned them into stage 3 heads. don't know what that means and I can't find specs on stage 3 heads.
 Six pack carbs edelbrock manifold.

Lots of other stuff but those are the main parts.  What do you guys think of power wise?

I was reading the specs of stock heads 906 They have the  2.08" intake valves and 1.74" exhaust valves and
915 are 1.60" on the standard head 2.08 intake

The heads on my engine are 2.14 and 1.81.. does that mean the heads have been ported already? sorry if its  a dumb question just curious.

With larger valves installed & hopefully hard exhaust seats they would have to blend the area behind the seat so yes some port work has been done however if nothing else was touched there is a lot more potential in the heads yet .
I would lose the cam , too much duration & minimal lift , far better grinds out there for what you want to use the engine for , with alum heads the compression ratio will be more livable on pump gas as well

I know its a rare cam but spoke with a few people who have ran this cam back in the day and got great numbers and track times. Aluminum heads seems to be the best investment.  Let's see how much I can get from these iron heads lol.
