Removing A-Arms and Strut
« on: June 24, 2015 - 01:17:44 PM »
I've only worked on GM's before and always had to fight the dreaded coil spring.  Obviously these car's don't have those dangerous things, so I was curious if I need to be aware of any surprises from loaded pressure when remove the strut and a-arms.

Thanks!

Yes. The torsion bar does hold tension in it and if it is not release and you break loose a ball joint, the lower control arm will slam down from the load. I fyou have any body parts under it when this happens, its gonna hurt.

To release torsion bar tension, simply unscrew the bolt in the middle of the lower control arm.

before you loosen the t-bar bolt, take the load off of it,  raise the car enough to get the tire off the floor but don't put your jack under the lca.  place your jack under the k frame, pinchweld or frame rail

to remove the T bar there is a small circlip behind the bar , scrape the gunk out of the socket , undo the nut on the front of the control arm pivot & the strut & pry both the cotrol arm & T bar backwards together , this is the easiest way to remove them otherwise you can be fighting with the T bar for a while & may damage it . You may want to upgrade to a larger 1"+ T bar & improve handling while it is apart .
