Centrifugal Superchargers
« on: June 25, 2015 - 10:01:45 PM »
If I decide to go the 440 route for my future Challenger, I definitely want to do an EFI conversion, and I want a centrifugal supercharger that is compatible with that (the Paxton I saw was for carbureted engines), suggestions?

Also, what would I have to do to this engine (or a 392 Hemi, depending on what route I go) to make it work well with a supercharger, and to toughen it up to make sure it lasts and stays reliable?

After doing quite q bit of research on centrifugal superchargers, I actually lost interest in them. Apparently they act more like turbos than superchargers. The higher in the rpm band you get the more boost you get.

The example I was looking at didn't even net 5 psi til 3500 rpms. Whereas  the roots type I looked at would hit 5-7 psi at 1500 rpm and stay at that pressure for the duration. And the centrifugal would keep building psi as they don't have a natural limiter installed (Paxton was the brand, you'd have to install a waste gate separate) and by 6000 rpm could be around 20 psi.

As for what to do to the engine for boosted reliability, I would say forged crankshaft, rods, and pistons. Then you're going to need good tuning so that you don't have detonation, and in that aspect fuel injection would just be easier.

Alright, so if I go 440 I should just go for a roots supercharger with a blower?

again there are a number of choices , you can go big 8/71 through the hood , or you can go EFI & use a whipple screw blower all under hood or turbos or .....

That's what I'd do. Most efi kits for older type motors all on the throttle body to act similar to the carb setup on superchargers,  just talk to the manufacturer and ask what they suggest (although 1/2 the time Paxton never gets back to me). I haven't looked into the Whipple superchargers so much as they don't make one for my motor.

I forgot to answer your earlier question about procharger and efi. They make a different connector for efi that will fit onto the throttle body and work that way, assuming you use the efi that places the throttle body on top of the intake manifold like a traditional carb setup.

Well, as much as I love a blower, I want this to be a pro touring car, so I want to keep an R/T hood. So I think I'll look into Whipple and Paxton

Ever seen street outlaws? The fast guys are all switching to turbos. All that boost and no engine drag.

Superchargers run all the time, turbos only kick in at a certain point. Not to mention last I heard, turbos were more dangerous

that really depends on how the turbos are sized.

DO more research on turbos , this is the way I was going to go on my 440 Charger , more effcient , better milage , with 2 smaller turbos the lag would be minimal , can be hidden underhood , better fuel economy as well

I couldn't find a whipple supercharger for a 440. Care to show me where to get them? Or is it a custom fab job?
