Clutch selection
« on: June 28, 2015 - 08:34:59 PM »
So I think I'm going to give Brewers a call and line up some new pieces parts.

Anybody is welcome to chime in on thoughts and opinions.

The car has a 500 ci stroker
M/T ET streets
full steel car
99% street with a trip or 2 annually to the track

So honestly more street than strip but my concern is a weak clutch kit will be "beat up"
or even ruined by more engine than clutch, but I'd also like it to not chatter like crazy too.

ALSO, I'm a machinist / tool and die maker by trade, and I would think a blanchard grinder
would be good for resurfacing my flywheel, sound OK?

I have no problem with the B&B style clutch but get this, I have been using no overcenter spring.
Stupid question, but would picking up a new one from Brewers help on overcoming some of that
clutch pedal effort?

SO I'm thinking without talking to them...

A McLeod 10.95 Performance clutch package
Kit to rebuild the z-bar
and a new overcenter spring

Hit me, what you think?

sounds right but there are a number of choices -
first overcenter spring is a must & will help pedal pressure !
There are approx 6 different clutch disc facings , feramic is brutal but will take the heat no prob but no slip , more like an on & off switch  , Kevlar is often used , semi metallic , on & on .
Pressure plate again you have choices , 3 finger B&B or my Fav is the B&B Long hybrid , lighter pedal using better leverage  but great grip , diaphragm not what I recommend at all , too many issues & Mopar was never designed to use them so ratios are wrong etc . There are different pressure ratings also .
I used a Street twin with a B&B Long PP , it uses twin discs & will hold more power than I will ever make , I may have cut some corners in my resto but not in the drivetrain areas !!
Talk to McLeod & Brewers tell them what you have & see what they recommend

Craig @ CJD Automotive has a brand new Mcleod Street Twin Clutch for sale.... He's sold the Tremec & assorted parts but still has some parts.. Don't know if the discs are different for the Tremec or if they are 18/23 spline... Could be worth a phone call...  His price on the package was pretty good, since he split it up you might catch a deal...
