Hey guys I'm a new member and was wondering if I could get some opinions on the value of a '72 Rallye Challenger. A guy I work with has one that's been sitting for several years that I'm considering purchasing. The car is yellow with green interior, automatic and AC. The interior is pretty much shot but the body is in good shape with only minimal surface rust and good floor pans. It originally had a black vinyl top but it was removed at some point. The car was running and driving but the gentleman that owned it passed away and left it to his son (my coworker).

So the question is how much is it worth?

The 72-74 are a little less desirable than the 70-71.  By your pictures, it looks like a nice starting point, and looks to have little to no rust. I would say a good price would be around $7000 to $8000.

What engine does it have ? 340 or 318 ?

Welcome to the site! The Challenger looks to be in good shape and pretty much complete. I hope you can reach an agreement, this car needs to be saved!

It's a 340 car. Would it hurt the value to do a 440 swap or color change? I'm not the biggest fan of the green interior and I'd love to go plum crazy but if it would be better to restore it to original I would.

If you want to maximise the car's future value then it has to be restored 100% stock.
If you want to maximise the cars fun...do whatever the heck you please :2thumbs:

Build your car your way, you will always find people with different opinions.  And most of them do not even own a 70-74 E Body.

you would be shunned if you had some super rare hemi cuda with the rare built by jesus himself engine with gold tires but this car is a prime car to build your way. I give the same credit to a well thought our resto-mod as a well executed OE restoration.

BUT WAHTEVER YOU DO

 :iagree:build it the way you want it, if you were at a dealership and ordered a new challenger in 1972 you should build it the way you would order that car. but i think a small block might be less trouble, being you have all your brackets, and torsion bars all ready and a small block is lighter and should handle better. more even balance, but like we all say do it your way. o ya welcome aboard

Handling is very important to me since this will be a car I enjoy driving on our local curvy roads but I also want something that can keep up with modern muscle. The norm these days seems to be around 450hp at the crank (426hp-2015 Camaro SS, 485hp-2015 Scat Pack Challenger).

Whats possible with a small block mopar? I don't have a problem with a small block but theirs just that appeal of a big cube mopar with three deuces up top :biggrin:

I'll be honest up until this point I've been a die hard GM man and I've owned plenty of Camaros and Corvettes, just being on the forum makes me feel like I've turned to the dark side rofl. With that being said I don't have any experience with Chrysler engines so any input is greatly appreciated.

I think that car is the perfect candidate for a resto mod upgrade.

there are several ways to go with upgrading the handling department. Plus the 340 can be built to run strong and pull hard.

Look up the Hotchkis E-Max, might be right up your alley. It's a small block car with bolt on suspension mods that handles really well.

I say restore it back 100% original.....
If you want to modify it completely, go buy one already done :burnout:
