New Member with 1973 Dodge Challenger 340 4 Speed
« on: July 03, 2015 - 03:58:41 PM »
Hello,

I am a new member trying to get a current value of a 1973 Dodge Challenger with a 340 4 Speed.  The car had originally been restored back in early 90s.  I bought it in 93 and drove it for 3 years.  At the time I lived in New York and ended up moving to California.  The Challenger was put in a farmers barn where it has been for 19 years.  The car has gone downhill a bit, probably a little more than I would have liked.  At first the farmer was starting it every couple weeks but then the battery died.  It has not been started up since about 1998 or 1999 and the Chrome rusted up, radiator leaked out and probably other stuff I do not know about.  Right now I live in Michigan and am going out to look at the car next weekend.  I want to bring it back to Michigan, possibly sell it and buy a Harley.  How is it possible to get an accurate value of what it is worth?

Thanks

Pluses 340 & a 4 spd....  But condition can kill it.. New York car means rust is the big question....

You simply can't look the value of these cars up on KBB or Edmunds as the market value of these cars is so subjective. Probably the best thing to do is to surf the net and look for other 72-74 Challengers for sale in similar condition and see what they are asking for them, price your car accordingly and then see what happens. :dunno:

Thanks for the reply.  There is some rust but I don't know how bad.  When it was put in the barn in 96 there was a little rust, but not much.  The motor, trans, interior had all been redone with the restore. The body work had been done too and it was repainted burnt orange.  The vinyl roof was stripped, but there was a little rust behind the rear window and down at the bottom of the car.  But it wasn't much.  What it is like now who knows.  But it ran like a top before it got put away.  I guess the thing to do is go get it and bring it back to Michigan where I am now and see if it will start up.

I'm guessing that you haven't personally seen it since you tucked it away in the barn all those years ago :dunno:

I assume that this barn is in NY somewhere? Don't mean to be negative, but I'd temper my expectations as to what it looks like now - NY is terrible on cars - even ones in barns. :bricks1:

No, I have not seen it since 2003.  My expectations are tempered.  The barn is actually is Starrucca PA which is northeast of Scranton PA by about 35 or 40 miles.  It is going to need some work for sure.  I just want to make sure I get what it is worth if I sell it.  But like you said it depends on the shape it is in.

its worth more if its numbers matching engine an tranny and complete drive train , and if  fender tag is still there also helps and look for build sheets behind seats front and back and there are a few other places they could be and that increases value to real mopar enthusiast

Thanks.  The numbers, at least for the block do not match.  The time stamp on the bottom of the block is from 69 or 70.  The tranny I have know idea.  But it is the 4 speed with pistol grip.  The fender tag is there.  I remember is says something about special handling car.  I am going to check it out next weekend and will get photos.

Thanks!  It was really awesome going into the barn after 18 or 19 years or whatever it has been and finding it like that.  Burnt Orange with black vinyl interior, can't beat it!  What year is your Challenger?

The fender tag is there.  I remember is says something about special handling car.

Special handling is not about how the car handles, but about how it was handled on the assembly line. Frequently, it meant a car was ordered for publicity duty or dealer use.
