Hoping for a decent job
« on: May 22, 2005 - 03:25:40 AM »
Sent Challenger off to the body shop, after reading the cover of Car Craft Magazine. Cover said "Don't get it perfect, just get it built." Figured with registering son for football and clinics already starting, I wouldn't have the time to get this car done. Wanted to get a great job done and was holding out for something reasonable. But I'm already pre-registered for Carlisle and didn't want to trailer the blower car, so I wanted to see how close I could come to being finished with the challenger before Carlisle. So I'm hoping my friend just does a decent job, and I think I would be satisfied based on the timespan and the very reasonable price he is giving me as a friend. So wish me luck.

This is a long story so I am going to try and make it a little shorter. Saw this car about 11 years ago, guy was working on it, asked if it was for sale he said no. While sitting outside shop, car gets hit on the passenger 1/4 and tail panel. We become friends and talk cars whenever I see him. Car sits for a long time with" it's not for sale" the usual response. Fast forward to  the summer of 2003, friend says to start making room for the car. I was a liitle startled because I had just bought the blower car about a month before. October, friend says come and pick the car up. I locate a tail panel and trunk lid. Had the 1/4. Another friend installed them, but he did not have the time to finish. So the car sits for a while. Clean up the motor a little bit.Now the bug to drive this car is getting me a bit excited. The car has been insured for over a year. It's registered with plates so as soon as it comes from the shop it will be almost ready to go. Friend is going to do the entire front end while he has the car there. I had all the bushings waiting to be installed.I just bought a driver 1/4 at Englishtown, N.J.He is going to install that.As far as price like I said I am looking for decent, not a show winner. He did a pretty good job on my friend's 64 cutlass 442, so since I bought the car from him I was willing to give him the opportunity to see it get finished. He is not in the best of health so he has employees doing the work.   So the only major item left after this will be the convertible top. Car is FE5 red with a whitepower convertible top and black interior,318 auto w/ console. Will try to take some pictures, should get the car back in about a month.

Couldn't take any pictures, because car was too close next to the owner's stang convertible. They started the work on the driver's side fender looks pretty good. Will post pics when I get the opportunity.

I hope he is doing the front end work before he paints it because I am doing my front end work after it came back from the shop and its like working on pins and needles with fresh paint.

Matt
Too many projects and nothing gets done.

Matt the beauty of letting him do it is, if he messes up he has to fix it. ;D

Was going to stop at the body shop last night, but had to pickup daughter from dance studio. So went home in another direction. This morning while talking to one of my best friends, he said he was talking to one of the guys from the shop when a lady asked if he knew who owned the old car inside. He said he did. She told him that they were inside doing alot of work on the car. That was on Thursday 5/26. I was there on Wednesday and the passenger side fender was almost done. Looked real good. Friend said that there was 2 guys working on the chally. The driver's 1/4 was just stitched on. The windshield was already out. So it looks like they are getting busy on the car. Won't be able to check it out till Tuesday, but can't wait to see how it's coming out.

Thanks for posting the pictures Rusty. The only thing I was worried about was the driver's side 1/4 seemed a little low :dontknow:. Hopefully the door can be adjusted a little. I think the problem could be in the aftermarket skin, if there is a problem. Most guys don't even notice it till I point it out. But I might be just a little too critical, because they aren't even done working on that side yet. They are trying to repair the channel at the bottom of the deck filler where the water drains into from the top. At least they are working hard and continuosly on the chally, so probably won't make it to Carlisle with this car, but at least can have it for the heart of summer cruising. :driving:
