Carpet installation 73 Cuda
« on: July 11, 2015 - 01:32:29 PM »
I received my new carpet yesterday for my 73 Cuda. Seems to fit in the car pretty well. I'm wondering if you guys glue it down or just let the scuff guards kick plates ect hold it down. It seems that it would need some adhesive to keep it in place. Any help on this or any other phase of installation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

Yes, glue it in, start small with the shifter hole and only remove enough for shifter to function, use a soldering iron to make clean holes for seats and belts

Ahhh, thank you......any advice on the type of glue? Contact cement or spray adhesive.  Put it everywhere or just as needed??

3M 77 or 3M 90 if you really want it to stick.

I'm sure you could use other adhesives if you like.

Factory never glued them, just saying. You can use heat to help them mold to contours a little better. Make sure you leave them spread out to relax long before you try to install. Laid out in the sun does wonders.

Yup, never glued one in my live, owned Challengers since 75, replaced allot of carpets... Once you bolt the seats down the carpets aren't going anywhere... Add sill plates & it's further locked down...

I never glued the carpet in my 65 Riviera when I replaced it with new carpet. Yep, seats hold them well

Ok........I took the majority advice and have installed it without adhesive and I think that was a good call. Almost done and it's looking great. I have one more question, on the dimmer switch should I mount it on top of the carpet? Is their a trim cover for it that I don't have?

It's looking good. Don't know if you removed your old carpet but Mopar just had a hole in the carpet the dimmer poked through. Some of the carpets come with an incorrect grommet that the switch pokes through you can install  after cutting a hole.  I usually slice a small X in the carpet where anything needs to go through it.

Sometimes its easier to install the carpet if you use a little adhesive around the four speed area to hold it down.

You can do it without but at the same time the adhesive 3M 77 or even 90 can be easily removed if needed.

Which looks nice but isn't correct for a Mopar... GM used a similar grommet on their high line cars but Mopar simply punched a hole...
