Loose Steering
« on: July 13, 2015 - 05:45:35 PM »
Think its been about 30 yrs since any suspenion upgrades.
The manual steering is pretty loose.  Without rebuilding the steering
box, which components should I replace? thanks

ok, maybe 25 years, but its just a straight line street racer for the most part,
and, everything else has pretty much been replaced.

Have you given any attention to the sector shaft adjustment screw?

don't know what that is, but will research it.  Seems the steering wheel turns more degrees to the left,
before the tires turn, than when steering to the right.

Looks good from my house.   Mine needs adjusting too.  Did not realize the hard spot in center.  I don't have it, now I know I need to be close to it.  Good information.

Gives you the idea... not necessary to take the thing apart for adjustment, just loosen the jamb nut. There's a process Ive seen posted here somewhere for a simple adjustment.

Probably just adjust nut, so steering is most responsive (without slop), with no hangups from
full left poistion to full right steering wheel position.

Question is: Does front suspension have to be under load while doing the adjustment??

Everything I've seen suggests disconnecting the pitman arm no load seems to be the way to go.

my 72 service manual calls it the cross-shaft adjustment screw, and
has about 3 paragraphs on how to adjust it.
