70-72 Bucket seat differences?
« on: May 22, 2005 - 08:15:02 PM »
I was wondering what are the differences between 70 71 and 72 challenger bucket seats.  I know the patterns are different, but what about the rest of the seat such as the plastic back, latch, foam, etc... and are the seat covers interchangeable.  I am only asking this because I have a 71 challenger and would like to put a set of seats that can be recovered with the 71 covers.  I have a set of 70 seats and I know of a set of 72 seats available to me.  Can either of these be covered with the 71 covers and be correct or will things be different and should I just look for a set of 71 seats?

the basic frames are similar between the 70-71 , the latch on th eside is different though , you will also need matching foam pads to fit the cover you want to use
the 72 doesn`t use the palstic seat back

If your looking for originality, than try finding 71 seats. If you cant find them, then go with the 70 seats. The 70 seats are almost identical to the 71, except the release button is longer and for this reason, the plastic seat backs are different on a 70. You can get the 70 seats recovered in 71 skins by a decent upholstery shop, but you MUST have the matching seat foams. The upholstery shop will have to make the thin pieces of metal where the skin is attaches to the springs (they will charge you extra for this), but other than that you shouldnt have any problems. I personally have pieced together a 71 seat, a half of a 70 seat, and (2) 72 seats to make a set of 70 seats. BTW...the 72 seats have a hard plastic back on it, but the rear frame to the seat does not have the springs like a 70-71 does, so you cant use them.

Thanks for the reply guys.  I will probably then see if I can trade my 70 seats for a set of 71 seats because my 70s are in pretty good shape except for the covers being torn.
