Which mufflers ?

I have Flowmaster 40 mufflers mounted on my stock 383, 71 Challenger, with a 2.5 inch tubing.

When I installed them they sounded agressive but not that loud, but the sound changed a bit a few months after, with more drone/resonance, and now that I came back to HP manifolds instead of the Hooker headers, it's even worse. I like the sound but it's real loud and ear fatiguing, time for something else ! I thought of adding resonators but I want to get rid of the Flowmasters because they are not the best in performance.

I'd like to pick a pair of mufflers that sound good and performs well, with no droning. I plan to cruise long distances with the Challenger and I don't want to put ear plugs each time I drive her. I really liked glass packs (Cherry Bombs) on a friend's Chevelle, they were really agressive at WOT, louder than Flows but without any drone. Too much for me I guess.
Dynomax seems to have a great panel of choice, the Super Turbo or Ultra Flow mufflers sound like a good option. The Flowmaster PRO serie mufflers are an option too, or even Flowmaster 50s, but I'd like to avoid multi-chambers mufflers if possible.
When I got the car I had worn Raptor mufflers, which I guess are very simple, and cheap. Believe me they sounded quite good and flowed better than Flowmasters, maybe an option ? Only problem : I hear they don't last...

I have Dynomax VT on my HP383 with HP manifolds and no resonators and really like them.

Maybe try adding a crossover if you don't already have one?
I have magnaflow s on mine . I like them They have a nice rumble to them cruising around and sound like all hell broke loose when you put the hammer down.

Thanks for replying, I'm really interested in the Dynomax VTs. I found that having stock manifolds or aftermarket headers make a difference in the final sound. I don't really like Magnaflow from what I've heard (too sterile IMO) but I need to hear a Mopar equipped with those.

What about "stock" resonators from Accurate ? Are they too restrictive ?

I've run Magnaflows on both big block and small block Mopars and it is now the only muffler I run on them. Great sound and no drone.

  Not trying to be a smart a$$ here by any means. It seems to me that considering you are running a stock 383 with HP cast iron manifolds, restriction shouldn't be an issue. Not saying that they don't run well at all, I am just saying that you are not trying to shove the airflow that 550+ Horsepower would require through the exhaust pipes. If the resonators restrict you any at all behind 2.5" exhaust and the 383, it would be minimal. You wouldn't be able to tell any difference on the street and probably less than a tenth on the 1/4 mile track. I say all that to say this: I would pick the sound that you like the best and install them on the car....

The exhaust sounds are personal to each enthusiast. For me, I originally had flow masters and the sound was too annoying for me. I went with the accurate stock system and like the sound. Perfect for me.  I don't race my car and not worried about any loss of hp. It's a cruiser for me. I have a stock 383 with stock exhaust manifolds.

 I am currently running  a pair of the Hooker Max Flow mufflers on a 2.5" system under the rear seats on my 340 Challenger. I also run a TTi X-pipe and a set of the Classic Chambered 4" OD body x 12" long resonators (#25-RES-SPE) beside the tank.
I love the sound of this system! It has a mellow idle/cruise tone and it is loud at WOT.

 During the Winter when I mounted this system, I was worried about having resonance at cruise. So I opted for the rear mounted resonators. There is no drone with this setup.

Ok, I got a 340 with 2 1/2" pipe , hooker headers , x -pipe, Flowmasters 50 series and pipes out the back.

They sound ok  no drone,  I took off the headers and sent them out to get re-coated. So I put the stock manifolds back on temporary until the headers returned, the noise and drone was very bad and my ears felt like someone was hitting  bass drums.

That said I would probably go with a different muffler or my be even a stock Hemi muffler.

Years ago I had Walker Hemi mufflers on my 340 Duster and sounded very crispy, just might cut the exhaust and try those old mufflers.

Thank you ! Yes my Challenger is real stock and I don't think adding a resonator or not is going to have an influence on how the car performs, but I definitely think that Flowmasters aren't the best when it comes to performance. They seemed looser with poorer throttle response when I installed them after worn Flowtech Raptors the car had when I bought it ; they are cheap turbo mufflers. The Raptors had better throttle response, no drone at all, a bit quiet at idle but in a pleasant way, and started sounding real cool at wot.
I don't want to go Flowmaster again, I really want NO drone at all when cruising at normal speed, I think the best route to go is turbo mufflers.

After a bit of research I still have to choose between the Magnaflow, Dynomax VTs and Flowtech Raptors mufflers. Why ?
1) The Raptors are real cheap and I really liked the sound and performance (street car), why wouldn't I buy a pair again ? Only problem is that they don't really last...
2) Dynomax VTs look like my best option : no rattle at all and great performance. I read that some people complain about the rattle they produce...
3) Magnaflow mufflers : a classic ! They always sounded a bit "sterile"/too modern to me but they are not ear-fatiguing and you get great flow.

when I had my 68 roadrunner with a 383 I had hush thrush mufflers on it and really liked the sound. mean/aggressive but not blowing up your ears in the car,   may actually go back to them on my 340  http://www.thrushexhaust.com/products.html

I love the sound of Cudas.  Especially convertibles.
