cuda, correct style water pump?
« on: July 15, 2015 - 02:27:16 PM »
all,

a few last details and I want to find an answer...
what is the correct neck style water pump for a 1971 cuda 340 engine w no a/c.

should the "neck" portion of the pump be the "open" tube type  or the "tapered" fin type.

I have an original 70 340 block that has the open tube style but not sure if this was changed in 71 or if this is the original pump.

Also were the original pumps painted with engine color or left unfinished?

thanks

The top photo is the correct style.(with holes)  I don't believe the other style was ever installed on any engine at the factory.  They are an aftermarket design.

The engine was completely assembled before it was painted.  The exhaust manifolds, torque convertor(on automatics), bell housing(on manuals) water pumps and bypass hose were all installed before the engine was painted.

excellent info but unfortunately that's what I thought,

with that being said does anyone know of a place that has either new or rebuild correct style water pumps?
all my normal sources all come up short (summit racing, classic industries, yearone, even a Google search)
some picture the correct style in advertisements but when I have them pull the item and check it out of the box, they all have been the wrong style so far.

other wise anyone know of a place that will "rebuild" my original?

or is there some type of rebuild that one with fairly decent mechanic skills and tools can perform?

I got a remanufactured pump from a parts store.  Any NEW pump will be the updated snout design.  The reman pumps might still be the original style.  I think you can send your pump out to be redone but I'm not sure who does them.

The original pump will have a date code cast into it.  There will be a cast circle with 12 sections.  There will be "dots" in some of the sections.  That signifies the month.  The year will be cast in the center of the circle.  It's the same date system used on other parts like alternators.

It's a little hard to see but this shows the dating system cast into the alternator/waterpump/timing covers exc...

You can see it above the pulley.  There is a circle with 12 graduations.  Each one stands for a month.  There is a 72 cast in the center which is the year.

sounds crazy.....
but what about purchasing one of these "wrong neck version" pumps, and taking all the parts out to put into my original housing after thoroughly cleaning it?

would all these parts be compatible, or does someone some type of water pump rebuild/seal kit ?

So you already checked the reman units from a parts store?  They are all the new style?

yes, all I find is this "new style" at all local stores and on line,
I have ordered a total of 7, and all have been wrong; even after two which I specifically asked vendor before purchase to confirm neck style, which they said they looked and confirmed they were the correct style

So....what have others resorted to?
again I have the original housing which I could purchase a rebuilt "new style" and swap parts over?

thoughts?

Just to be clear, you have ordered 7 "remanufactured" water pumps?  NOT new ones?

I used to have a couple original ones sitting around.  I hope I didn't toss them out.

I use  John Stewart Power Brake in Stoney Creek ON, but your local auto parts store should have a "send-out" service.

so, I did more running around this weekend, trying to find a place that offers a rebuild service for water pumps, I also check all stores inventory to see if I could find at least one with the correct style, no luck.

does anyone know of someone in the states that offers this service?

other wise I do have one that I have not sent back yet, what about taking that one apart and swapping parts into my original housing? thoughts?
