Fresh Motor Questions

I have had my Cuda running and driving now for about three months. In that time I've had to pull the transmission and have it rebuilt, pull the radiator and have it re-cored, and pulled both exhaust manifolds due to coolant seeping out of the manifold studs. At this point I am pretty optimistic that I have all the bugs worked out. This is my first carbureted rebuild, all my previous experience is with newer turbo efi cars.

How long before I do my first oil change? It has maybe 50 miles on it so far, and I am still running the break-in oil. Can I just directly to a full synthetic for my first oil change?

This may be a stupid question, but I'm just curious how the inner workings of this fuel system works. If the car has been running recently, it will fire up immediately once the key is turned. If I haven't started it for a few days, I have to crank it for 20-30 seconds. It's not really a big deal, I'm just curious what's going on. I always had an understanding that the fuel pump has a one way valve, so gas cant drain back out of the fuel lines into the tank. Am I incorrect with this thinking?

Maybe every car is different, but what it the best procedure for starting the car when it has been sitting for a while? Pump the gas pedal? Hold it to the floor while cranking? I'm a noob when it comes to old iron, any help is appreciated!

Change the oil... Now.... Look at it  in bright sunlight to see if it looks normal or glittery...

As far as the hard start after sitting the fuel doesn't drain back to the tank, it evaporates... ////older fuels were more stabile but between EPA requirements & formulations designed for EFI where the fuel is either kept in a seal tank or pressurized in the fuel system our old carburated vehicles suffer from a number of run ability issues... An electric fuel pump would solve it but personally I've always just accepted the 15-20 second crank on cold start-up... It allows the engine to have full oil pressure before it fires anyway so it's not all bad...

When your cranking the engine wants fuel so pumping the gas is what you need to do, but for the first 10-15 seconds there won't be any fuel so pumping is pointless...

Good info, thanks! From what I have read, I should use non-synthetic oil for at least the first 3000 miles, correct? I've read a bunch about oil and it sounds like Brad Penn, Lucas Hot-Rod, or Valvoline VR1 seem to be the oil of choice for older cars due to their high ZDDP content. Correct?

Yes that is correct. Run one of those non synthetic high zinc oils for break in otherwise you run the risk of wiping out the cam. After 3 thousand miles you should be good to switch to synthetic. :cheers:
